Police nab motorist after chase

SINGAPORE - A 28-year-old man was arrested for voluntarily causing hurt to two public servants after he tried to escape during a routine patrol by the Traffic Police on Sunday night.
The officers had stopped the motorist along Victoria Street at about 11.15pm when he pulled up with passengers in his car in front of Chijmes.
When the officers found that he did not have a valid driving licence, he got out of his car and fled. The officers gave chase as the man ran towards Bras Basah Road.
Very quickly, they caught up with the man in Bras Basah Road and detained him after a struggle, during which he bit the knees and hands of one officer.
The other officer injured his wrist when he tried to subdue the man.
"The two officers were injured on their hands and knees during the struggle. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest for voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant and is also being investigated for offences under the Road Traffic Act," said a police spokesman.
A person is liable for a jail term of up to seven years, as well a fine and caning if convicted of voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant.
