This morning I woke up to find out that police had attempted to seize Lynn’s phone, laptop and iMac. They were unable to properly justify why that would be relevant to their investigation into ex-SMRT bus driver’s allegations that they had been beaten during interrogation. After Lynn called a lawyer it was settled that she would take her property down to the police headquarters in the afternoon and let them examine the things in her presence.

As I write this, she has been in police headquarters for about four hours. They have opened her laptop and taken her hard drive, and now taken her phone. Below is my Storify of events as they unfurl.

People are now asking these questions - can anyone working in law enforcement, or lawyers, help with the answers?

1) If the police come to your house, are you obliged to let them in if they don't provide any documentation (warrant/court order etc.)?

2) If the police asks you to turn over personal items, are you obliged to do so? (again without a court order)

3) If the police asks you to go to the station for questioning, are you obliged to do so?

4) What are your rights before and during interrogation, and do they differ if you are at the station of your own volition vs. being formally arrested?

e.g. (i) Can you make any phone calls to your family members and/or a lawyer?
(ii) Can any person of your choosing be present during questioning, or be able to view the interrogation in another room?
(iii) Can you request for your interrogation to be videotaped or recorded in any way?
(iv) Does the police have any authority to stop you from communicating with 'the outside world' during the interrogation?
(v) Can they refuse you water, food or bathroom breaks?
(vi) Can they physically handle you in any way, including but not limited to searching your body and possessions?
(vii) How long can you be detained and questioned without a formal arrest taking place?
(viii) If you had gone to the police station voluntarily, can you choose to leave at any time?

Can petition to govt to have it as our KPI ( key performance index) for the PM to bring down our ranking..currently 149....

i.e by 2015...less than 100
by 2020 .....less than 50...
by 2030....less than 30....

This is only a dream....

Hope the Police realise that this is 2013 and that the whole world is watching what is happening here.

The govt should muzzle the police and take away such draconians rights from them.

If allowed to go unsupervised these people will become monsters that will not listen to their masters.

Look at China. The young leaders there try their best to become good with neighbouring countries BUT the army, police and others have scant respect for their leaders and do things at their own whims and fancies.

Better nip the problem in the bud now.
