SINGAPORE - A 40-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of putting up notices at a Housing Board block in Sengkang that falsely claimed that "our water is contaminated".

The police confirmed with The Straits Times on Saturday (Feb 10) that the woman was arrested under the Mental Health Act.

ST understands that the woman is a resident on the 12th floor of Block 406B, Fernvale Road, where the notices were found on Friday.

The police had earlier confirmed that a report was lodged and said that the case had been identified as one of intentional alarm.

Water agency PUB had put out an alert on Friday saying that it had received reports of a notice pasted on the doors of units in Block 406B, Fernvale Road, on Friday.

The notice, written in English and Chinese, reads: "Our water source is heavily contaminated with poisonous substance. Please use mineral water for drinking and cooking. Please cover all floor traps and sink holes when not in use as there is unidentified gas present."

PUB made a police report and collected water samples from the block.

It said that in-situ tests showed the water quality was within normal range and was safe for drinking.

"The public need not be alarmed," said PUB.

Police investigations are ongoing.
