SINGAPORE: Police are investigating a poll conducted by the Straits Times on the Punggol East by-election.
The Elections Department said this in response to media queries on Sunday.
The paper had conducted a poll with 50 Punggol East residents after the Writ of Election on January 9.
The results were published in an article the next day.
It is understood that such polls conducted after a writ of election is issued, may contravene the Parliamentary Elections Act.
Under section 78c, the Act states that "No person shall publish or permit or cause to be published the results of any election survey during the period beginning with the day the writ of election is issued for an election and ending with the close of all polling stations on polling day at the election."
Any person who contravenes can be slapped with a fine not exceeding S$1,500 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or both.
