Mr Zoellick with PM Lee Hsien Loong yesterday. The World Bank head was in town to formalise a new tie-up between Singapore and the global body. -- PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO

<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"-->WORLD Bank president Robert Zoellick has warned that the global economic slowdown will weigh on Asia well into the first half of next year. 'I'm afraid that the first six months of 2009 are going to be a problem worldwide, including in Asia and South-east Asia,' said Mr Zoellick yesterday.
'This is a region that has gained enormously from international trade, and it will feel some of the dangers from the slowdown and actual decline that we're now forecasting in international trade for next year.'
Even in China, leaders who had expected to see a decline in growth were 'struck by the sharpness and the depth of the fall off in exports', he said. China reported last week that exports fell last month for the first time in seven years.
'We've gone from a financial crisis to an economic crisis, and in early 2009 we'll see an unemployment crisis,' he added, paraphrasing Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
Whether the downturn will persist beyond the first half of next year depends on the policy actions now being taken by governments around the world, said Mr Zoellick.
So far, 'no one has a very good prediction for the length and depth of this crisis'.
But the positive news is that countries have acted in a 'cooperative fashion' as they come to the realisation that this is 'a global crisis and it will take global solutions'.
However, there is a danger that government actions to stimulate growth could lead to a trend of protectionism.
'The biggest concern that I have at this point is that some of the second-order ripple effects of various policy actions could lead to other actions by governments that might pull away from cooperation,' he said.
Calling the difficulties in the seven-year Doha round of trade talks 'particularly unfortunate', he urged governments to 'stay on the offence on trade because protectionist forces will raise their head'.
Mr Zoellick was in town yesterday to sign a memorandum of understanding with Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo. Singapore will collaborate with the World Bank to lend its expertise in urban management to developing countries.
After the signing, Mr Zoellick took part in a dialogue hosted by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, where he discussed issues such as common criticisms of the World Bank and the possibility of a shared Asian currency.
He also said he 'never believed in the decoupling logic', but that he believes in 'multiple poles of growth'.
As recently as 1992, no one thought China and India would be growth drivers, he said. 'One of our challenges in the World Bank would also be, can we help Africa become a pole of growth?'

The dialogue was held at the National University of Singapore's Bukit Timah campus, and attended by about 300 people, including Ambassador-at-large Tommy Koh and the Monetary Authority of Singapore's assistant managing director, Dr Khor Hoe Ee.

In the business world, a firm & assertive handshake sets the tone of the business relationship.

Would you giggle like a little girl during a customer meeting? Would you dig nose, shake leg, scratch balls when talking to your customers?

knn.... this kind of basic communication also dunno....

Not the first time liao. I remember there was this time, the news was showing him meeting some foreign minister. Both of them walk towards each other, the other guy took PM's hand, place his foot into PM's personnel space and lean towards him. To my surprise, PM backed up by half a step! WAHLAO. Pissed me off totally. Switched the tv off instantly.

If like that go for negotiation, sure lose one! OMG!!

This kind of handshake clearly affirm an egoistic, aloof, "I know better than thee" attitude. This is a subtle body language that he has not much regard to the other party. If you observed all his previous handshakes, you'll realize it's mostly the same style.

If he thinks he's somehow more superior than the World Bank president, then I think its pretty much the best signal on how internally his arrogance is. The irony is that Robert Zoellick has had to work hard to be able to get support to become President of the World Bank.

LHL in contrast, depend on his father, and hasn't anything to show for it thus far.

But who's more qualified and who has to work really hard to get to his position?

The President of the World Bank is a much higher position than the PM of Singapore. Besides, now, the PM isn't the highest ranking member in the Executive side of the S'pore political system. The MM holds all the power, and the PM is merely the face- or some people would say- the mask.

MM said his son is the best we could find in Singapore. Singaporean, including those retarded ministers, are all not as capable as his son woh. That is why his son get the position by default.

Perhaps LHL wanna take cues from the incoming US President?

You can send him to attend thousands of social etiquette courses. It would be of no use. This is something which is inborn.

Another blog ever commented his NS days marching sight: right foot out with right arm out, left foot out with left arm out.. Is it true..?

Nah. It looks corny to some, but according to body language experts- yes there's such a job- that gesture signals that he's confident enough and he's in control. That strong handshake also signals strength.

That's why Obama's body language, by far, has been better than most other candidates. He has always been in control of his emotions and even his body language.

I wouldn't speculate on that. But if one of his fellow bunk mates would want to spill the beans and confirm it, it'd no doubt be pretty embarrassing. Maybe that's why no-one would come out publicly. Maybe one or two will insist on remaining nameless before they say it off the record.

Every parent will say (wishful thinking) his own son, whether a retard, brat or ah qua is the best in the world. However, in choosing someone to be the leader of your own country, the parent has to, and must, face reality. In other words, decision is no play, play. Otherwise, the whole country goes under as everyone is witnessing now.

A decision made based on maintaining the dynasty can never be in the interest of the future of a nation. If this dynasty is not stopped quickly, we will see the third generation being eased in as the crown prince and all of us including our future generations will continue to be screwed.
