SINGAPORE: Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Singaporeans can and must do their best to help the poor, to express concern for fellow citizens and to make sure needy families are not left behind.

He said there will be needy families in every society, however affluent, so it is not possible to eliminate poverty completely.

Mr Lee, who is also MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, was speaking at the Lions food collection and distribution Silver Jubilee celebrations on Sunday.

He highlighted the generosity of stallholders and residents as an important part of the Singapore spirit.

Mr Lee said on Fridays, residents and stallholders from Ang Mo Kio Block 226D market, together with the Pasir Panjang and Jurong wholesale centres, donated food items.

Needy residents in 14 homes looked forward to these weekly supplies.

Mr Lee said: "Serving the community is more important in a world where income distributions are getting widened, stretching out and where it is easier for people to get immersed in our private spaces, preoccupied with our own lives, our own concerns and not so focused on working together to help others.

“We must encourage every one of us to do something to help fellow Singaporeans and thus keep Singapore our best home, a cohesive and united people and a happy and bright future for all of us."

Fucker only knows how to taichi...

Hope he suffers another irreversible cancer relapse and have his father watch him wither and die.

Why is the government giving scholarship to India nationals, meanwhile on the home front they are preaching the rich must help the poor, why not give to the local poor instead of giving to some other countries who doesn't owe any loyalty to Singapore.....:*::*::*:

Talk is cheap! Why don't he and his ministers give half of their salaries on a monthly basis to the poor. Sure will make a difference. And they will still be rich in the top 1% wage earners.

And talk is getting cheaper by the day. When Wooden was PM, he suggested that top businessmen donated x% of their income. The proposal was met with stony silence. Not surprising because NONE of the Ministers etc offered to donate.

If there is any leadership among these MIWs, they should set the lead before telling the rest of us to help the poor. What have the minsters been contributing to charities? To these hypocrites, their guidelines are all about YOU, YOU and YOU when it comes to giving. And when it comes to taking it is all about ME, ME, ME, ME, ME, ME........

Why should the poor be given money for nothing while the rest of Singapore has to work hard in order to move ahead?

The last time they wanted to help the poor, GST was raised to 7%. But ever since GST was increased, how was the poor helped? They still exist in our society.

Then there's the emergence of the new poor, people who are not under the poverty line and not getting any help from the Govt, but are struggling to juggle their monthly expenses due to the high cost of living and stagnant earnings.

Do our best to help the poor? Most are struggling to help themselves at the first place. It is Govt's most basic job to help the poor, and they are not doing too well at that.

This no 1 left behind idea has actually been achieved, but not quite the way you expect.

It's been achieved by making it almost impossible for the large majority in the middle to move up the social economic ladder, by hammering them with high cost of living and stagnant earnings. As a result, the middle class aren't going anywhere except down the ladder, and the poor remain where they are. So the ideal of "No 1 left behind" has been achieved.
