He wanted to have his hand on top but trump pull the hand towards himself and bend his own elbow to lift up the hand. The end result is the look of one with out stretched arm offering his hand for a kiss. To make it worse he must have been taught to sit straight. So leaning forward to show confidence has never occur in his mind. The tension must have also caused him to forget where and how to place his left hand, causing him to assume his most natural position which helps to complete the perfect posture that befits his nickname.
