Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will make an official visit to France and Poland from Sunday to Nov 1.

Here's the latest trip. Why are so many of our cabinet ministers jetting around lately?

Do we know how much money is being spent on these so called 'official' visits? And do the spouses of ministers pay their own fares? How big is the delegation? How do we know if we are getting our money's worth from these official visits?

These official trips are very important.

I can think of a few reasons.

Maybe it's end of the year & they must exhaust all their excess funds.
It's the school holidays & who's to know if they are not bringing in their kids?
Time to do some Xmas shopping & there are many Xmas deals out there.
Want to check their loot
If so many MPs are away, might as well close shop & join the fun

They are definitely important ...for Christmas shopping, take a taxpayer-funded break and maybe meet up with secret lover.

Does your colleagues, bosses, friends, yourself and family members goes for business trip? Do you tell them the same thing?

brain chemistry is affected (positively?) by travel.

when you return home after a good trip, do you feel a general sense of euphoria for a period of time? and then reality bites once its back to work.

Safer to check overseas bank balances from foreign internet.

First and foremost, it is the duty and responsibility of any Cabinet Member, MPs or Head of Departments who travelled overseas at the public's expense to let the public know about the purpose of that visit and the results achieved from such visit. The cost of that trip should also be made public.

That is ACCOUNTABILITY.....

On their return, they should facilitate the formation of Quality Control Circles (QCCs) or Work Improvement Teams (WITs) and brainstorm on the ideas they received. It should be a live presentation on National TV

The MPs should also become the QCC or WITs Leaders with the Cabinet Ministers acting as Facilitators.

The aim of live presentation is to keep the citizenry informed about the achievements and benefits derived (both tangible and intangible).

Leading such teams and making live presentations on TV would also broaden the knowledge of the MPs and the people will be able to gauge their intelligence and capabilities.

Is this asking too much from a bunch of people who are paid World's highest salaries.

What is being done now is absolutely wrong and irresponsible.

Had this practice been followed, the Palmergate Incident could have been averted.

How these people work, will also become a sort of measure for their eventual promotion as Ministers of State, etc...

Governing is a serious matter and not a kiddy game of masak masak or hantam bola.

In other words you're not satisfied with the current level of "wayang" and you want to take "wayang" to new heights.

hope the PM minder will 'remind' him to observe proper protocol....

if need to halt and bow to state flag....PM needs to...

its not a wayang if the discussions subsequent to the trips generate positive outcomes. we can't expect all the discussions to bear fruit, but the process of discussion with the public changes the fundamental way of thinking towards governance of the state.

in a nut shell, give people ownership of our policies.

The trips are about networking. You can't put a dollar value on that.

I went on many business trips where nothing was sold and no contracts were signed. We met... we shook hands... we went for drinks... dinner... nightclubs etc and then flew back home.

The benefits took a long time germinate.

don't disagree with those. but for the others, what mr koh said should be considered more carefully.

if its not against the interests of the nation, it would do no harm to publish more stats on these overseas trips. how can the truth be a bad thing?

these politicians like to hide the truth
to benefit them

when former HDB chief 'eat money' and was caught
he committed suicide while his family left the country and hide somewhere

the straits time (PAP mouthpiece) told us he had a heart attack
but 5 years later then they revealed the truth

by delaying the truth doent make them truthful
I think they reveal it immediatey after a election

"Revealing the truth" is not necessarily beneficial to anyone.

For example there was a member here who revealed his real identity because of a slip up when opening his account.

However, it does not mean that I should reveal the truth regarding who he actually is. Some things should be kept private and confidential.

normal citizen should not reveal identity online

but HDB chief Tay cheng guang is not a 'normal' person
his death should have been reported truthfully as it happened
they kept the truth to benefit PAP
becos they were telling people hpw "white' they were
by reveal the scandal that tey brought them
it would tarnish their image
so the truth was held back to benefit them

the outcome will definitely be different had the option of truth be taken.

interesting dilemma.

i once said all information should be shared, its a matter of timing.

i shall ponder more.

And do the spouses of ministers pay their own fares?

No, Ministars' spouses and those of children are paid for by LEEgime. All countries including Sinkieland follow the same practice: when ministars go on official visits, the expenses incurred by their wives and children are paid for by the state.
