Plane left Changi and catches fire in midair

A CHINA Eastern plane caught fire five minutes after take-off, national broadsheet The Straits Times reported Sunday.

The incident, which took place last Friday, caught all 229 passengers onboard by surprise.

According to The Straits Times, all 229 passengers were unhurt.

Flight MU568 was bound for Shanghai and had left Singapore on schedule at 4.35pm.

Passengers on the flight said they could smell something burning even as the plane was getting ready to take off, Chinese daily Lianhe Wanbao reported.

Subsequently when they were in the air, three loud bangs were heard.

Mrs Huang told Lianhe Wanbao that she saw the left wing of the plane on fire and spewing smoke.

The plane landed in Changi Airport after circling for 20 minutes in the air.

More than 100 Singaporeans were on board.

China Eastern Airlines had since confirmed the incident with Lianhe Wanbao.

But when contacted by The Sunday Times, a spokesman for the Changi Airport Group declined to comment.
