Photographer Sherman Ong wins award
By Surekha A Yadav | Posted: 18 June 2010 0050 hrs
SINGAPORE : A professional photographer and film maker has clinched the top prize in a contest that recognises the artistic achievements of shutterbugs.
39-year-old Sherman Ong won over the judges of the ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu photography award with his works that zoom in on the human condition and relationships with others.
Besides a cash prize of S$30,000, Ong's works will be published as an art book by the contest organiser.
Ong has represented Singapore in numerous festivals around the world, garnering a special mention at the Venice Biennale last year.
Ong said: "I focus my attention on people, to try and know their stories. And I think what interests me is how we live our lives, how we negotiate the space, how we interact with nature when we create our dwelling.
Agnes de Gouvion Saint-Gyr, Chief Jury, ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu: "This award will enable people and the outside world to know not only Singapore photography but Singapore society. What interested us unanimously in Sherman's work was that it's a very personal way of looking at the world."
The ICON de Martell Cordon Bleu is Singapore's first-of-its-kind juried award. With this award, this year's "Month of Photography Asia" kicks off.
