STOMPer Silvia Lim was shocked to find herself stuck in a gigantic crowd at Tanjong Pagar MRT station yesterday (Jul 1). She later found out that it was because of a heavy downpour that commuters refused to move out of the station.
In an email to STOMP today (Jul 2), the STOMPer says:
“As usual I was at Tanjong Pagar MRT Station on my way to work yesterday morning. When I was walking up the stairs, I wondered what had happened as I was struck in a gigantic crowd of commuters.
“I could hardly walk up the stairs. There were no announcements being made that we should use other exits.
“I thought that there was some terrorist being caught with a grenade, or that MRT staff were tracking the number of people who were having a fever because of H1N1, that’s why the passage way was blocked.
“Lastly, when I squeezed myself out of the crowd, I discovered that the massive human jam was because of the heavy downpour outside. Many commuters did not bring their umbrellas and so they refused to move out of the shelter.”
