Serious Pedestrians should always keep left to maintain order on the streets

very hard for americans to remember as habitually we keep right. *censored *.
Directional order on shared footpaths is thus good indoctrination / reminder of direction of travel rules for tourist or foreign workers NEW to Singapore.

As noted, due to the opposite direction of travel rule in Myanmar /Philippines / America, some foreigners in Singapore have suffered near/bad accidents when crossing Singapore streets because they are ignorant that traffic in Singapore, UK, India, Australia, Malaysia etc travel on left side of the street and thus they glance the WRONG way when checking for oncoming traffic.

One Myanmar maid in Singapore possibly caused her employer's kids death (and her own severe injuries) in October 2017 http://www.atimes.com/article/four-year-old-killed-maid-badly-hurt-crossing-road/ because of this difference in road 'direction of travel' convention across the world.

It is thus helpful to be CONTINUOUSLY reminded about the keep left on footpaths rule in Singapore so that pedestrians will not forget their bearings and check the WRONG side when crossing the roads.

Myanmar = driving on Right hand side of roads:

in very dense cities like tokyo, hk, shanghai it makes sense. japs in tokyo are the most disciplined and civic minded when it cums to walking on the right side, oops left side in japan. they not only follow the unwritten rules on the right side but also walk in unison at the same speed, especially in and out of train stations. if you go too fast, you bump into japs in front of you. if too slow, japs behind bump into you. it's like a scene from invasion of the body snatchers. perfect society for obedient "walkers" but horrible for mavericks and offshoots who think and do otherwise. while that mass behavior is 2nd nature among tokyoites, it's extremely difficult for young (rebellious) american kids to adapt. they find it stifling - a reason why mavericks in both japan and u.s. create companies and rule the economic world. this is great for the masses. elites have their own rules as they don't or seldom mix with the masses.

Updated as follows:
===================

Pedestrians should always keep left to maintain order on the streets
(Cars drive on the left side of the road in Singapore BTW)

(Just like when using the SMRT escalators), so that there can be safe and orderly use of public paths and PMDs users can safely overtake pedestrians en route instead of causing a mini traffic jam/ miscommunication accidents because pedestrians and PMD (Personal mobility devices) users do not know which side to take (like deer in headlights) whenever passing each other by.

SMRT escalators:

Many more will be using PMD like bicycles and e-scooters and even e-wheelchairs for transport/ work like food/parcel delivery services, elderly persons with amputations/ weak knees also need space so that their e-wheelchairs can pass/ overtake. It is important for pedestrians to be considerate and keep to the left at all times and not walk in a zig zag fashion or be engrossed with handphone texting or listen to loud music in earphones whilst walking.

Singaporeans need to learn to care and share more with each other and not adopt the entitlement mentality wherever they go.

Another iteration of the same pedestrian keep left rule is practised at Orchard Road so that pedestrians expeditiously cross the road, although evidently, many Singaporeans are unfamiliar with orderliness/ being considerate to others.

american tourists are used to the keep right rule. it's 2nd nature like habit. unless tourists are in sg for 6.9 days, very hard to follow quirky sinkie rules.....such as chope table with tissue packets, credit cards, tampons or umbrellas, and leave trays and dirty dishes behind at hawker centers.

Yup, but they will learn to quickly keep left here just like u have to look RIGHT first when crossing the road in Singapore to avoid being knocked down (vice versa in USA).
