VICE-president and senior Muslim cleric Ma’ruf Amin has said the Covid-19 vaccine currently being prepared by the government does not have to be halal, a spokesman said.
Vice-presidential spokesman Masduki Baidowi said Ma’ruf’s statement came during a meeting with Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan about the progress of the vaccine currently being developed by Chinese biopharmaceutical company Sinovac in partnership with state-owned pharmaceutical firm PT Bio Farma. “The vice-president explained an important thing: If the vaccine is halal then that’s good, there’s no problem, but if it is not halal it’s also not a problem,” Masduki said in a statement on Friday.
“Because it’s an emergency situation it’s okay to use (a non-halal vaccine).”
This statement seems to contradict a previous statement made by Masduki in August, in which he said the vice-president had urged Bio Farma to ensure that the much-anticipated Covid-19 vaccine would have halal certification before it was distributed.
Masduki said Ma’ruf, who is also currently the non-active chairman of the Indonesia Ulema Council (MUI), would ask an MUI team to go to Beijing to verify whether or not the vaccine was halal.
“But that will not be an obstacle. Why? I reiterate once again that a non-halal (vaccine) in an emergency situation is permitted,” he said.
Later, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said lockdowns are unnecessary and can unduly harm the economy in a video posted on the Presidential Secretariat’s official YouTube channel.
Jokowi reiterated that public health was the government’s number one priority, but added a caveat: “Prioritising health doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing the economy.
“Sacrificing the economy is the same as sacrificing the lives of tens of millions of people, which is not an option for us.”
He said that his administration was constantly looking to find a “balanced” way to address the outbreak.
“So, there is no need to act high and mighty about implementing lockdowns in provinces, regencies or cities because it will sacrifice the people’s livelihoods.

A NUMBER of mosques in Jakarta have disregarded appeals by Governor Anies Baswedan to cancel Friday prayers for two weeks aimed at curbing the spread of the deadly coronavirus that has so far killed at least 17 people in the capital.
Indonesia has recorded a total of 32 deaths from Covid-19, with the total number of infections at 369 as of yesterday.
The world’s fourth-most populous country announced its first two cases on March 2.
The government has been widely criticised for not doing enough tests, having carried out only 1,592 of them as of Thursday.
In comparison, South Korea has carried out over 290,000 tests.
Two of four mosques in South Jakarta visited by The Straits Times at noon yesterday, including Al-Azhar Great Mosque,- were operating as before.
But Al-Azhar, the second-largest mosque in the capital, was only getting about half its usual crowd, said one of its security officers.
It was full house at the Nurul Yaqin Mosque in Kebalen Road, though, likely due to the closure of the nearby Jami’ Nurul Hidayah Mosque, which had complied with the governor’s appeal.
Triadi, a hotel security officer who was on his way to Friday prayers at Nurul Yaqin Mosque, said: “Life and death is in God’s hands.”Another worshipper, 15-year-old Arif Nazib Arifin, said: “Muslims should not be afraid of the coronavirus and going to a mosque. If we get infected (at a mosque) and die, we die nobly.”
Anies announced on Thursday that Jakarta residents should not hold any gatherings at places of worship, meaning Muslims should not hold Friday prayers, Christians should not hold Sunday masses and people should not engage in any activities that would involve congregating for religious worship.
Anies’ stance is in line with the various social distancing measures that President Joko Widodo has taken.
“We can no longer say that the risk of infection is only at one, two, three, four or five areas (within Jakarta). It’s widespread and can be anywhere.
“Jakarta is an epicentre and the rate of (infection) growth is among the highest,” Anies told a media briefing on Thursday.
He said at present, cancelling Friday prayers was an appeal, a moral call and not an order, hinting that stern measures may follow if the residents were not cooperative.
Last week, he appealed to Muslims to bring their own personal prayer mat for Friday prayers.

Malaysia Health Minister Adham Baba has claimed that drinking warm water can help to prevent the Covid-19 infection.
Adham’s controversial comments were seen by Malaysians via a video of his appearance on RTM’s Bicara Naratif programme on March 19, Malay Mail reported.
The health minister, who is a doctor, was said to have recommended that Malaysians ensure their mouths and throats are always moist, as this will help to wash the virus down the oesophagus, so that it can be killed by stomach acid.

Responses to dubious advice
As expected, Malaysians were not ready to take such advice lying down.
A lawyer, Syahredzan Johan, called it out sarcastically as "a great life hack that everyone should know".
Another response was by Nur Amalina, a doctor, who tweeted: “Not recommended by doctors and it is no evidence-based.”
She also wrote: "There’s also no evidence that acid in your stomach can kill the virus."
Steven Sim, a Malaysian Bukit Mertajam MP, also took to Twitter to urge the Health Ministry to debunk its minister’s claims.
The former deputy youth and sports minister wrote: “In this time of crisis, I hope @KKMPutrajaya will address the statement by YB Health Minister that warm water can ‘ease’ the passage of the Covid-19 virus to the stomach where it will be destroyed by stomach acid. The rakyat need accurate facts to protect themselves.”
@KKMPutrajaya is the Health Ministry’s Twitter handle.
