"Childcare fees have gone up by 35 per cent in five years, despite the increase in the number of childcare and pre-school centres. This is because of high rental costs," she said.

She went on to say that the high rentals are passed on to parents as a result of a lack of subsidies, pointing out that only government linked PCF and NTUC kindergartens enjoyed $30 million in annual funding and heavy rental subsidies.

Earlier in the evening, most key WP party members took to the mic with impassioned speeches on hot topic issues like transport, childcare, healthcare and housing, all with the same underlying message: "The PAP has not listened or done enough for voters".

Agree that rental for childcare has gone up. If what she said is true that PCF and NTUC has subsidies, this is the reason what these centres charges lesser than most childcare centers.

As for other childcare centers, they are privately owned and if they decide to rent the place from private owners to run their business then it is their business choice. There are monthly subsidies for working parents who placed their kids in childcare. This give parents a choice where to put their kids based on what they can afford.

If rental subsidies are given to privately owned centres, childcare fee may not come down as it is given directly to the businesses. I have known a few owners of privately managed childcare centers, they owns a few condos. Whenever the monthy subsidies for parents are increased, you will see a pattern that they will increase their fees too according to the subsidies increased.

The childcare/kindergarten business is a highly lucrative one.

This is especially more so with all the FTs and their new families and their kids.

Do not be surprised if some AIM style dirty dealing is going on.

Re: PAP's PCF & NTUC kindergartens enjoyed $30 mil in yearly funding & rental subsidi

That is very true.

Monthly subsidy per child is around 400?
Average fee paid by parents is 500?
That is $900 per child.

The rental is around $20,000 to $30,000 a month which maybe can take in 100 kids. So monthly income is around 90,000?
You have about 7 teachers and 1 cook and 1 cleaner in a center. Each teacher is about $3000 and cleaner/cook at 700 per month. around $25000
Electrical, water, etc is around $4000. Food is about $5000 max. around $10,000

90,000 - 35,000 = profit.

Not including uniform, book, school outing, annual graduation fee...that is extra for the operators.

Have they kept up or are those pap and NTUC kindergartens still remained the same as they were ten to twenty years ago?

What about new teaching methods to encourage the kids to be independent in thoughts and activities?

If you measure by monetary values and there is no qualitative improvements, there is no progress at all.

And ho ching sister is head of moe!!! Eeek!

Manpower turnover rate is high due to poor salary and working with a group of women can be difficult. Many of us even have problem managing 2 women in one house. Wife and mother. Try to put 7 or 10 of them togather working.

That is based on if your center is running at full capacity.

Pcf and Ntuc childcare are "non profit organizations" so they enjoy subsided rental on top on setup grant which can amount to more than $100k. Monthly rent is at $2 to $3 per square meter as given by hdb. Mind you, not per square feet. So for a typical childcare centre with a floor area of 300 or more square meters, the rental is about $600 onwards. Private childcare centre of this size will loyally contribute $20000 to $30000 to Hdb monthly.
