More cars, so public transport trips down
THE Government's push to get more people onto buses and trains has hit a speed bump.
Motorists are not giving up their cars, going by data from the 2008 Household Interview Travel Survey. In fact, public transport's share of the total number of trips made during the morning peak period shrank to 59 per cent last year from 63 per cent in 2004 and 67 per cent in 1997.

SINGAPORE: The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said Tuesday ERP rates at three gantries will go up from November 2.

It will cost a dollar to pass through the gantry along Ayer Rajah Expressway between 8am and 8.30am, an increment of 50 cents.

ERP rate for the Eastbound ECP gantry at Marina South and the one on the slip road from Ophir Road will go up by a dollar to S$3 between 6.30pm and 7pm.

The rates for the other gantries will remain unchanged.

LTA said the next ERP review will take place in November for the December School Holidays.

I think this is to pre-warn all car owners that new measures would be in place soon to squeeze more money from you under the pretext of encouraging people to take public transport.

this is total bullshit.

Our population is 50% up from 1997 when public transport was 67% of the share.

If we were to go back to 67% overnight, will have to hire Japan-style pushers to cram people into trains.

The trains and the buses are jus too crowded. Anyone financially capable will of cos wan to buy a car and avoid the crowds. Too many FTs liao. Got a frn who took bus everyday to work. Without fail, there will be 1 sms everyday from this frn complaining abt the buses, the FT drivers and worse, the bus timing. Fuck LTA!!
