Elite PAP MP Lam Pin Min:
"However, Year 2008 is not just all doom and gloom. At least, not in Singapore. We have also achieved many firsts - winning the right to host the inaugural YOG, successfully organised the first F1 night race, clinching the silver olympic medal in the Beijing Olympics after a drought of 48 years, gold and silver medals in the paralympic games. These are indeed great achievements that Singaporeans are all proud of.”
My take:
Dr Lam Pin Min’s ingratiation with the “firsts” of 2008 shows that he is completely out of touch with the ground. These ‘firsts’ only goes to serve the vanity and vested interests of the ruling and corporate elites and is of little relevance and benefit to the ordinary Singaporeans struggling to make a living.
Organizing and hosting The Youth Olympics in the midst of an economic recession is a drain of our nation’s precious resources and taxpayers’ money. The F1 racing is only afforded by rich foreigners and Singaporeans while small retail businesses in the race’s vicinity suffered due to the blockade of key roads for the race.
