With the economy in downturn, MNCs relocating out of Singapore and SMEs cutting costs to keep their businesses afloat, the Singapore government has become the biggest employer providing a “iron rice bowl” for ordinary Singaporeans still fretting over possible wage cuts and job losses.
Indeed, the government has moved in lately to open up job vacancies for applications with the Home Team, a restructured hospital and the Ministry of Education, the latter offering a staggering 7,500 jobs in a quiet labor market.
According to newspaper reports, the response to these recruitment exercises has been largely positive. Not only are there many fresh applicants, some are considering a mid-career switch as an insurance against impending retrenchment.
The state media has also been carrying frequent reports on how the various government agencies - CDCs, WDA, NTUC etc. are lending a helping hand to needy Singaporeans.
