& when will the oppos unite into one party to take on the papee traitors?

There's no when, it's not going to happen. Oppos are literally weak and pratically straddled with petty difference. Compromise and make waves, turn whatever tides they have into tsunami and let voters knows things can change and have to change. When that happens we may well be looking at a different parliament, a circus into a market place. Never let anyone or any party have absolute power, it corrupts absolutely.:p

That exactly what the PAP wants you to think. Don't fall into that trap.

Have to agree with Kingrant on this. There is no need to be identified as one single entity. Everyone party has their own style and the better ones attract more people.

PAP capitalises on one individual to tarnish the whole opposition and we let them do it because some of us tend to think along those lines.

All opposition parties however have to a basic understanding and agreement not to undercut each other via 3 cornered fights etc.

As I said previously, its a huge mistake to think that the opposition is a single cell organism when it is not.

Its also harder to control the opposition when there is diversity. In 1991, the PAP learnt the hardway that there is one other viable entity other WP. They always treated Chiam as an enthusiatic independent candidate and paid the price, thinking that others in SDP were colourless.

I think 2 issues have to be separated here. One, how PAP wants voters to thiink. Two, how the opposition can evade that.

There are also 2 issues raised by Kingrant. One is opposition avoiding 3-corner fights. Two is having a common message. I had only responded to one.

3 cornered fights in PP and Hougang surely cannot be small meat. Its the single biggest bane of any viable political candidate to face a 3 cornered fight. Its is also the best known and proven strategy to scuttle an opponent. Paying "independents" with supposedly similar ideology as the target candidate will certainly split the votes enough to cause an upset.

Unless a political party fails to have adequate standards and vetting process, a spolier within the party is very remote.

It was quite true in the past when at least three parties could garner a percent of votes enough to keep their deposit. PAP won many of their seats with less than 50%. This is called split vote. However, in recent times, the "spoiler" or 2nd runner up has largely not gained more than 2% or affected the result in any way (except Chia Shi Teck). PAP has won mostly at least 60% or lost with 40% and below. Margins are pretty wide.

Assuming an independent spoiler enters PP or Hg, he takes 2% away from the opposition incumbents and they would still win. Furthermore, these opposition wards voters do not have the same mindset and for all we know, the 2% may also partly come from the PAP vote.

Of course, I would agree to keep out of 3-corners between serious major opposition parties. It is discouraging for serious people to get their $13,500 forfeited. As for spoilers who insist on butting in, they are not called that for nothing, so they would skip the inter opposition meetings.

Agree on the spoilers. JUst drawing your attention to the fact that in a tight contest, 3 cornered fights will cause the opposition dearly even now.
