The bitter medicine has been forced down our throats, now is the sweetener to wash away the bitter after taste.
A day after Temasek’s shocking $58 billion dollars loss was revealed in Parliament, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports announced a $77 million dollar plan to assist the low-income families. (read report here)
From April 1, public assistance rates will be raised by between $30 and $120 a month, with additional help for children from families on the scheme so that they can continue their education. These families will receive up to $130 per month for each child.
At the same time, an elderly public assistance recipient living alone will get $30 more a month - to $360 - while a family of four will see their assistance upped from $830 to $950 a month.
This was quite a dramatic U-turn for somebody who was unwilling to raise the original sum of $290 2 years ago and made the infamous retort to Lily Neo who pleaded with him to increase the monthly allowance for PA assistance - “How much do you want? Do you want three meals in a hawker centre, food court or restaurant?”
The timing couldn’t be more apt. Before Singaporeans have the time to digest the details of Temasek’s catastrophic loss, the government made a move almost immediately to display their “boundless compassion and love” for our suffering and hardship.
