I think a big part of why peasants still voted for the PAP during the last elections was because of the presence of Old Fart. Even in his old age and diminished capacity, Old Fart was still a comforting presence in the minds of the electorate. As long as he was around, there was a chance the ship of Singapore will remain on the proper course even when the new captain is his son. Even with all the screw ups, there was hope that Old Fart can fix it. The older voters have a relationship with Old Fart.
But now that he is dead, they are not obliged to vote for his son. Their allegiance to Old Fart does not translate nor transfer to Gay Loong. Old Fart is remembered for his fiery oratory skills that fired the imagination of that older generation. Pink Shirt wearing bapok couldn't fire anyone's imagination with his boring speeches, and slip ups even if he used kerosene. People perceive him as the spoilt privileged scion of a rich family installed to look after the family business. He is not the man that his father is. And therefore, he will not get the sympathy votes that he thinks he will.
I am out.
