In my opinion,
In 1942, LKY works for the Japanese Propaganda newspaper under the Kempeitai, there he learned how the Japanese use media to fool the public including their own Japanese soldiers. through media, the Japanese controlled their empire with an iron hand.
In 1965 after becaming the first prime minister of Singapore, PAP controlled the media. From 1965 to 2000, I and many other Singaporeans were reminded again and again that
without Lee Kuan Yew, there will be no Singapore
without Lee Kuan Yew, PAP will not succeed
without Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore will failed
without Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore will be in a mess
without Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore will not be a safe place
without Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore will not get independent
without Lee Kuan Yew, Singaporeans will not have a roof over their head
without Lee Kuan Yew, bla bla bla.......
I grow up learning all these, not sure about you, but after year 2000, with the explosion of the internet, Lee kuan Yew being an old school lawyer didn't comprehend the power of internet is bigger that the newspaper and TV broadcasting, he didn't engage the internet. Even mighty encyclopedia companies were bought down on their knees by the internet.
PAP didn't do much to make their presence felt, up until 2011 general election, I notice that 70% of the member of parliament don't even have an active facebook account. Lee Hsien loong made a last minute show of him answering questions through his inactive facebook account.
But it is too late, younger generation of Singaporeans and those below 50 years old have already grab a fair knowledge of what is going on in Singapore through online publications and sharing of information through social network.
Thank you government for not keeping yourself up to date, so that we can learn.
