Other issues pointed out by Low are the fact that the opposition are disallowed from organising courses and activities at community centres, while the PAP MPs can do so. Even worse, the opposition don’t have proper facilities to conduct Meet-the-people session, and can only do so in void decks.
For those are astute enough, parallels between Ng-Sue and Palmer-Ong affairs seemed apparent. The same level of scrutiny that was applied to Ng and Sue could be similarly applied to Palmer and Ong, more so given the accusations levelled at PA promoting PAP’s interest. This is being consistence and is the real issue that looms at large.
If the vacated seat of Punggol East Single Member Constituency was to be decided, the PA-PAP relationship will become a major hot-button topic. Even if the PAP wants to ignore the topic, the opposition will bring it up, and there is no running away from it. WP who is likely to contest the seat has previously brought up the issue of PA’s bias in favour of PAP and against the opposition.
Even without the saucy details, most can easily perceive what the Palmer-Ong affair symbolises – the PAP is in bed with PA. In the event of a by-election, it is hard for the PAP to escape such allegations and scrutiny, the same ordeal that Ng and Sue went through.
It is now the PAP’s turn to be in damage control mode. Perhaps, an act of saving grace will be to totally dissociate itself from the PA, e.g. put in checks and controls to ensure no conflicts of interest, and most importantly, institute changes to ensure that the PA serves the interests of all Singaporeans regardless of political alignment.
On the other hand, any instance of news from now on about PA-PAP conflict of interest or PA favouring PAP will plunge the knife further into PAP’s wounds. In other words, the only way out is for the PAP to come clean on the PA. In essence, the two entities have to file for a divorce.
