<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I refer to last Sunday's letter by Mr Edmund Lin, 'Tough times, so hire S'poreans first'.
I have read a lot about Singaporeans complaining that their jobs are taken away by foreigners. However, as a spa service operator, I find that my biggest headache is manpower.
I would love to have a team of skilled Singaporeans, but the reality is that locals are not interested in working in this industry.
My many attempts to hire Singaporeans have failed. In fact, every time I place a hiring advertisement, about 90per cent of the replies I get are from recruitment agencies eager to supply me with China or Filipino workers. About 9per cent of applications are from Malaysians and, if I am lucky, 1per cent from Singaporeans.
I believe this trend is common among the beauty, hotel, food and beverage, and other service sectors. Look around and you will notice that there are few locals working as full-time servers in restaurants. Instead, you will see China or Malaysian workers.
Have a look again at hotels, and you will see that most of the reception or front-desk positions here are filled by highly paid Filipino staff.
When I was looking for front- desk staff for my business, almost all the respondents were Filipinos. And because of certain regulations under the S-pass scheme for foreign workers, they command a minimum pay which is 30per cent higher than that of a Singaporean receptionist.
But why do businesses still hire them?
Simple, there are just too few Singaporeans who want these less glamorous jobs.
Jobs in the retail and service sectors, which require shift work and working on weekends and public holidays, are unable to attract the younger generation of Singaporeans used to the good life, no matter how attractive the incentives may be.
To the Singaporeans out there complaining that there are no jobs for them and that we are being 'invaded' by foreign workers, the reality is that there are many attractive jobs in the service industry for them.
But if Singaporeans do not want these jobs, businesses are left with no choice but to hire from abroad. Wendi Chan (Ms)

Why should companies employ sales managers, laboratory technicians, engineers, project engineers/managers from abroad when locals are retrenched from such jobs, looking for such jobs or can be promoted to do such jobs?

Whenever the topic of foreigners robbing jobs from Singaporeans is mentioned, employers will always cite jobs, like waitresses, which are unsuitable to the pool of available, local workers. Can a retrenched manager in her 40s apply to be a waitress? Which restaurant would employ her even if she is willing to accept the salary? Local women in their 20s, suitable for the job, would either be still studying or holding better jobs.

We are talking about different kinds of jobs--not low-paying ones but those which educated white collar Singaporeans are capable of doing well but losing them to PRs and foreigners from both the developing and developed worlds
