Overboard Singapore laws/ perverse judicial interpretation openly declares it's okay to penalize totally innocent people.

"District Judge Lau added that while the High Court expressed sympathy for the vehicle owners who were not implicated in the underlying criminal offence, it made it clear that the wording of the statute did not allow for any regard to be had to the degree of the vehicle owner’s innocence, or to the level of precaution that had been taken.

Said the judge: “Similarly, for the appellant here, even if the prosecution were wrong to say that the accused had been driving without a valid driving licence, and even if the appellant had conducted due diligence and taken all necessary precautions, these factors would not provide any ground for the court to release the vehicle to the appellant." https://www.straitstimes.com/singap...-vehicle-rental-firm-protesting-its-innocence

Nonsense law from 1952 colonial area by colonialist to penalize severely those who short changed the then (rapacious) Queen of England now extends to confiscation of property from totally innocent people 72 years later.

New CJ, please decide if the late CJ was wrong.

Not going to check it but even if its old, probably not, they certainly KNOW the ramifications of it

It just passes the buck to the companies

In this case the companies can probably do little to prevent idiots from using their vehicles to do this and other crimes

Lets be realistic the companies cannot monitor nor prevent it

So only recourse is insurance or get hirer to sign something
Which means probably cannot people in 20s cannot rent unless they get some other guarantor
Honestly, if our parliamentarians actually bothered to read statutes (bread, butter role of MP), ranking people like ex cabinet transport minister S Iswaran wouldn't be in prison right now. All things point to the fact that he wouldn't have accepted the gifts if he knew it was against the law, he could easily have afforded them or done without. But he probably didn't even bother to read any statute/ laws but was just parachute into legislature/ politics by PAP head honchos. This his mistake attracting a jail term.

But it remains parliament duty to clarify issues in legislation etc as and when they occur, especially when crazy judges start prosecuting innocent people and even more crazy citizens suggest absurd solutions that obsolete or bad laws and bad judgements should instead be solved by forcing/ insurance companies to solve the exact problems that parliament or the judiciary caused.

How do the citizens ever survive if the first 2 pillar of government are irresponsible and push the problems they created to the last pillar of government or the private sector to solve. This state of chaos is the surest path of downfall for our young nation.
