How are commuters and drivers paying more? Coz now they are obviously paying less....and even for taxi drivers their costs have gone down too though taxi fares remained the same.

Shareholders like myself will be earning less dividends and capital gains thanks to Grab. Our incomes will be affected. What is the government or oppies planning to do about this?

The LTA needs to step in and curb Grab from being the sole market leader. We all know shit happens when there's no competition and there's only a monopoly.

I am disappointed that the police or ISD has not stepped in to dissuade the Grab bosses from such severe industrial disruption.

SINGAPORE - More than 3,000 ComfortDelGro taxi drivers have signed up with Grab over the last month, the ride-hailing firm revealed on Friday (Oct 6), with the majority choosing to switch to become private-hire car drivers.

Last month, Grab began offering ComfortDelGro cabbies aggressive rental discounts - $50 a day, or about $1,500 a month, to join one of its partner taxi firms, or up to $1,688 a month to sign up as a driver with its private-hire car service GrabCar.

Grab's salvo came after ComfortDelGro, which is the largest taxi operator here, announced in August that it was in talks with Grab's American rival Uber for a possible partnership.

In March, five taxi operators - SMRT, Trans-Cab, Premier, Prime and HDT Singapore Taxi - announced a partnership with Grab, a move that introduced upfront fares and dynamic pricing for cabs here.

Only ComfortDelGro held out, introducing its own upfront pricing option on its mobile app a month later.

While Grab said that the current promotion, which had received "strong interest", would end on Saturday, observers said the ride-hailing firm could continue offering such deals to entice ComfortDelGro cabbies in the future.

National University of Singapore professor Lee Der Horng, who specialises in transportation systems, said Grab could afford to do so, noting that it had already raised almost $3 billion in its latest round of funding.

"I do not rule out the possibility of Grab offering even more incentives should the partnership between ComfortDelGro and Uber go through," he said.

Singapore University of Social Sciences transport researcher Park Byung Joon said: "To compete with Grab, ComfortDelGro has to decide whether it is willing to spend as much (as Grab) to attract and retain drivers, and stop its market share from eroding further."

ComfortDelGro did not respond to The Straits Times' request for comments regarding this latest development by press time.

Grab's announcement came even as the latest figures from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) show that the taxi population here has continued its downward trend, dropping to a seven-year low of 24,863 as of August.

ComfortDelGro's combined cab numbers - under its Comfort and CityCab brands - also dropped to 15,127, from a high of 17,143 in April last year.

In comparison, the number of chauffeur-driven private-hire cars stands at 42,000 as of July.

In July, The Straits Times reported that the number of idle taxis hit 9.1 per cent in the first five months of this year, almost double the amount during the same period last year.

Meanwhile, as of Monday, the LTA has approved 53,000 private hire car driver's vocational licence applications, since it began accepting applications in March.

This is more than half of the number of taxi driver's vocational licence holders, which currently stands at 97,467, down from 100,271 in January this year.

Dr Park, however, believes that the number of applications will slow down in the near future.

"This won't go on for too long more," he said. "The private-hire car market is already very saturated."

None of them have been profitable anywhere in the World even though Uber claims that the US is profitable. Its massive funding that is driving to see who will last in the end.

The clear sign is the move by Uber and Grab to actually move over to the traditional taxi model - actually cars and drivers.

Uber Board more or less made it very obvious that they are going hell bent on going for IPO before the juice runs out. Its founder practically kicked out and one of the king of blue chip investment in the IPO has been brought on board.

In summary

1. what works despite all the claims of being disruptive and innovative is that every city and country must have taxi and cars that must be run by responsible companies. More or less the traditional model. The App is an excellent enabler of service, speed and accountability.

2. An app no matter how clever is an app. Zomato does a huge service but it can never take over restaurants and cooks.

3. Grab, Uber and their likes as well as their stakeholders have only one singular interest and that is go for IPO.

ComfortDelGro Corp's largest shareholder, the Singapore Labour Foundation, has pared down its stake in the transport giant again.

The Straits Times understands the labour body has sold 170 million of its ComfortDelGro shares for about $332 million. This is out of the 252.6 million - or close to 12 per cent share - it previously owned.

The amount raised indicates that SLF had unloaded the shares below ComfortDelGro's last transacted price of $2.18.
