Singapore's Orchard Road came out tops in a global survey that ranked the world's top shopping areas, based on criteria like appearance, atmosphere and how welcoming staff were, among others.

Conducted by Presence Mystery Shopping, a Paris-based market consulting company, the survey scored Orchard Road 89 points out of a possible 100, beating out other famous international destinations like Champs Elysées in Paris, France and Japan's Ginza Line.

Shopping areas were judged by four criteria. 'Appearance' was a measure of a district's cleanliness and lighting, 'Welcome' rated staff greetings, courtesy and availability, 'Atmosphere' looked into details like how many garbage cans available, whether there was open space and clean pavements, while 'Contact' was about how ready passers-by were with directions and help.

i din noe flood water contribute to atmosphere...really eye opener.

So to put it succinctly, Singapore has the most servile cleaners in the world? Impressive  :D

I think it's time we pay road sweepers million-dollar salaries. After all, the global reputation of Sinkieland hinges on how clean it is. Yes, the measure of a country's success is how clean its streets are

I'm surprised that Market Street, San Francisco is ranked. Eatshitndie, care to comment?

hi there

1. ram, i am also very surprised hk lost out to the orchard flood hoh!
2. honest, shopping in hk beats sheepishland with flood or without flood pants down.

Indeed, was wondering the same thing as well. There is no way Hong kong would be ranked lower then Singapore in this.

The French must be smoking some............!! & said C'est si bon! or have very 'greasy' palms!:D

29. Des Voeux Road, Central, Hong Kong: 57

Sounds so fake. I hate it when Hongkies use French in their movies or even stalls.

5. Oscar Freire, Sao Paolo: 82

Still, I'd rather shop in Brazil or even North Korea than in Singapore. Don't any of you ugly and useless dirt and even your equally-fugly garbage maids pollute these fine places when I'm there!

International shoppers of Pinay CBs: Orchard Towers and Lucky Plaza.

I didn't know there was such a thing as "International Shoppers?"

I wonder who would call him/herself an International Shopper?

Cheers!

Orchard Road is overcrowded with peasants, foreign and locals. How can it be No. 1?:eek:

A good shopping district should provide a high class atmosphere where it is not overcrowded by poor peasants.

Based on my own international travel experience, the rankings of top 10 shopping districts should be:

No. 1 Place du Casino, Monte-Carlo

No. 2 Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills

No. 3 Place Vendome, Paris

No. 4 Rue du Rhône, Geneva

No. 5 Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich

No. 6 Fifth Avenue, New York

No. 7 Ginza Line, Tokyo

No. 8 Champs Elysées, Paris

No. 9 Magnificent Mile, Chicago

No. 10 Boulevard Haussmann, Paris

As for Orchard Road, Singapore and Des Voeux Road, Hong Kong, they should be ranked towards the bottom.
