IN JULY, the two opposition wards of Hougang and Potong Pasir were told they would get their much-awaited lift upgrading earlier than expected.

On Friday night, it was officially confirmed that the Government had picked the blocks that would get a lift landing on every floor.

The announcement came from the People's Action Party's (PAP) grassroots advisers in both wards, which had been told after the 2006 General Election that they would be last in line for the Lift Upgrading Programme (LUP).

The adviser in Potong Pasir, Mr Sitoh Yih Pin, said nine blocks had been picked for the LUP. They are Blocks 101 to 109 in Potong Pasir Avenue 1.

Mr Sitoh, the PAP's candidate in Potong Pasir in the last two general elections, added: 'I'm very happy the LUP is coming to Potong Pasir.

'This new facility will certainly benefit our residents, especially our senior citizens. I look forward to successfully implementing this project in our estate.'

He will be sending out a circular to residents in the selected blocks soon.

In Hougang, the PAP's Eric Low said LUP had reached the constituency, but he refused to disclose how many blocks had been selected. He plans to announce the news today at a grassroots event.

'It is a result of our efforts over the years,' he told The Straits Times.

'For residents living in blocks that are more than 20 years old, there are likely to be people around 60 to 70 years old. Without a lift on every floor, it is definitely a burden for them.'

Result of their efforts over the years???
He has just proven himself to be another shameless pappy and a loyal lackey.

And finally they realise there are also old folks in oppositions' ward that need the lift upgrading. After so many years of threatening with no upgrade, wards become slums and still they fail, now they have a change of tactic to play as mr nice santa claus, give 1st then ask for votes.

HG and PP resident, take the upgrade and do not feel that you owe them, it is they who owe you for many years. Please continue to vote wisely, 33.3% depend on you.

watch it carefully.
they may tear down the old lifts, go into election season, and then threathen you with not installing the new lifts unless they win.
if they lose, they may simply walk away leaving the residents with no lifts at all.

they may also announced these lift upgrading plans to raise your hopes first.

Then they suddenly tell you they must win in election first before any drilling even starts.

really shameless of them to claim such credits. PUI!

the worst thing is they do it halfway, stop the project, continue after they win the elections.

Finally there is a chance for Hougang to be upgraded, but it is too late for me. Here's my story.

My dad is very ill and he has difficulty in walking, especially climbing the stairs. We would bring him down to the park a few evenings of the week. But as his condition get worsen, it is a torture for him to climb the stairs, and it is not possible to carry him due to his size. Since then, he can only spend his time within the house.

During every election we keep hearing that there will be lift upgrading, but only if we vote for the RIGHT person. And in the end, there is no upgrading. Last GE there is even a promise of $100m upgrading, and again if only they win. We were hoping that since it is a huge sum of $100m, even if they lose, they will use a portion of it to upgrade the lifts, as Hougang is not a new town and there are a lot of old folks in the estate. And again we were disappointed.

Now they announce there will be a chance for Hougang to be upgraded, but it no longer matters to me. My dad has passed away. During his last few years he can only stay in the house.

My Dad has been working all his life, I have also served my NS and pay my taxes. What makes us so different from other citizen? Just because we live in an opposition ward? Whether there will be any upgrading means nothing to me now, it is just too late.

It is the pappies that owe the residents, there is no need for the residents to feel grateful. And for some, the LUP is already too late.
