Oops, we could not find a good engineer after global search to run SMRT

KNN, you don't need someone with engineering background to run SMRT. Anyone with common sense can liaoz.

Sinkees are screwed big time liaoz.

A CEO does not need to possess technical qualifications related to the industry he is involved in.

When I was working in the manufacturing, the worst CEO I worked for had an engineering degree and the best CEO I worked for had an arts degree.

Running a company isn't about technical skills. It's about having a vision as to where you want to take the company and then hiring the right people and getting them to go along for the ride with gusto.

The best example I can think of is Apple. Steve Jobs had no formal qualifications whatsoever. He relied on Wozniak for ALL programming and circuit design work but the company achieved greatness because Steve Jobs could inspire others to work like dogs in order to turn vision into reality.

If Wozniak had become CEO, Apple would not have lasted more than 5 years.

Nobody dared bullshit me about technical problems when I was MD of a big manufacturing operation........... a arts degree holder would have been bluffed left, right n center by his engineers.

I guess you were bullshitted to death by your accountant then. :p

That is a total piece of crock. Jobs had no formal qualifications, but guess what, neither did Wozniak. Woz dropped out of Berkeley after 1 year there. However, both Jobs and Woz had lots of self taught technical background. Job's father taught him to tinker with electronics at a young age, like stripping and putting back together TVs, and radios. When Jobs started Apples, he may not have the same technical skill set that Woz had, but Woz was quite a few years older. However, Jobs exisitng technical skill set enabled him to recognizing a promising technology when he saw one. If u have no technical background at all, than you would just catch no spider when sone shows u something or explains a device to u. Hence, potentially costing your company many business opportunities.

how about the fiasco with Saw Phaik Hwa? she was parachuted in from DFS to head MRT and the rest is history.

the CEO need not have full domain knowledge, but she must have some at the very least. Saw had less than some.

If you're going to split hairs then how about Frank T. Cary - IBM CEO.... no technical qualifications. All he had was a business degree. Same goes with John R. Opel... another marketing man with no formal technical qualifications.

Larry Ellison... another dropout with no technical qualifications whatsoever. Picked it up as we grew the company.

If you're a smart cookie. You pick things up. An engineering degree teaches you next to nothing about running a technology corporation. Most CEOs of large American corporations come from marketing backgrounds.

You don't need formal training in your field in order to be CEO. Ralph Norris, a prominent Kiwi did a great job running a bank and then did just as good a job running an Airline. He didn't have an aviation background but using the logic expounded by some in this forum, pilots and aircraft engineers would have an easy time pulling the wool over his eyes.

In Singapore Inc. cronies and nepots get to run the show. Bloodlines and family relations rule. Look no further than Grace Fu or Tin Pei Ling, or any of the legions of SAF paper scholar trash who gets parachuted into cushy govt/stat board jobs.

Engineers are too busy selling insurance & cars to get into project management let alone engineering management!

Nothing to do with background or qualifications. She was simply the wrong person for the job.

Problem here is that their anointed one is not even a practising engineer (Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Master's degree in Public Administration).

Desmond Kuek's Bachelor of Arts is in Engineering. Oxford and Cambridge's undergraduate degrees are all Bachelor of Arts. The Oxbridge Master of Arts is an honorary degree automatically conferred upon anyone with an Oxbridge B.A. after six years.

Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science are just English translation of Latin words. One can get a B.A. in Engineering just like one can get a B.Sc. in Literature.

At least the army guy will treat security more seriously.

Also, army people understand process and SOP better.
