Online vice ring has no link to latest case, say police

The police say an online vice ring that made the news last month is not linked to Friday's case, which involved nine men charged with having commercial sex with underage Vietnamese prostitutes.
Investigations into the earlier incident are still ongoing, a police spokesman told The Straits Times on Friday.
However, sources said the high-profile probe - which counts a former primary school principal, public servants, finance professionals and lawyers among the 80 men called in for questioning - may be in its final stages.
Some of them are believed to have had paid sex with a prostitute who was below the age of 18 at the time.

SINGAPORE: Forty-four men, including nine civil servants, were charged in court Monday with having paid sex with a minor.
They allegedly procured the services from an online vice ring which had employed the underaged girl or girls.
In February, reports said 80 men, including a former school principal, were believed to be assisting in the probe.
The police had said then that the investigation is part of on-going enforcement efforts to clamp down on vice syndicates.
Lee Lip Hong, 39, the former principal of Pei Chun Public School was not represented by a lawyer and was the only one who said he will plead guilty to paying S$950 in total for the sexual services of a minor on two occasions in 2010.
Lee resigned from his position in December last year, to the shock of parents and students, after serving the school for three years.
When asked, the Education Ministry said it's "unable to comment on the case, as the matter is before the courts".
Others charged included lawyers, naval officers, a managing director and businessmen.
The youngest is 21 years old, and the oldest, 48.
They are accused of obtaining sexual services from a girl or girls under 18, sometime between September 2010 and March 2011.
They allegedly paid S$450 to S$850.
During the court session, lawyer Subhas Anandan took issue with the charge sheets.
"How is anybody going to know what he is charged for when you don't know who the girl is, and what her age is? We just can't accept the word of the prosecution... We are going to ask the prosecution, the DPP, to give us further particulars. If they do not give us the further particulars, we will take it up in the High Court," he said.
While the exact number of girls involved in the cases is not known, one thing is consistent - the 44 men sought the services from a person identified as Tang Boon Thiew, the alleged ring leader of the group.
Tang is said to have been charged last year and his case is ongoing.
Tang was charged on November 4, 2011 on 34 counts under the Women's Charter and one for allegedly having paid sex with a minor.
The case against the principal will be heard again later this month while most of the others will have their cases mentioned again in June.
If convicted, they may be jailed up to seven years, fined, or both.
More men are expected to be charged at a later date.

Lee Lip Hong, the former principal of Pei Chun Public School was charged in court on 16 April for having sex with an underage prostitute.
He is among 44 men charged today for having sex with an underage prostitute who is believed to be part of an online sex ring, reported The Straits Times newspaper.
The OMY website said Lee pleaded guilty and was not represented by a lawyer.
Lee reportedly admitted to two charges of paying $500 on each of the two occasions of sex with the girl.
AsiaOne reported that the married father of one had sex with her at Hotel 81 Bencoolen on 26 September and 14 December in 2010.
According to the Chinese newspaper Lianhe Wanbao, the underage girl in the centre of the case is said to be a part-time model as well.
The report said regular clients received discounts and paid her $450 for sex.
The pimp in the online vice ring is said to be 39-year-old Tang Boon Thiew who was arrested last year.
The newspaper said he is believed to own several companies in the region and had hired 16 social escorts to be part of the online sex ring.
Besides the former school principal who was charged, it is believed there are nine civil servants involved in the case. Others include high ranking individuals in society, including company directors.
Among those charged include police superintendent Tan Wee Kiat, 35, and former National Environment Agency in-house lawyer Chia Kok Peng, 38, AsiaOne reported.

He is among the 44 men to be charged in court today under Section 376B(1) of the Penal Code, Chapter 224 for prostitution of minor under 18.
The 39-year-old is reportedly the only one who admitted to the two charges of having paid $500 on each of the two occasions for sex with the under-aged girl.
He had sex with her at Hotel 81 Bencoolen on Sept 26 and Dec 14, 2010.
Previous reports have stated that he has a son from a marriage of over 10 years.
Reports first broke in February on the bust of an online vice syndicate which employed under-aged girls, which saw 80 men reportedly being implicated.
The suspects included high ranking men from both public and private organisations, and comprised of both bachelors and married men.
Among those charged include a police superintendent Tan Wee Kiat, 35, and ex-National Environment Agency in-house Counsel Chia Kok Peng, 38.
The men are said to range in age from their 20s to 50s, and are believed to have paid for sex with a Singaporean girl two years ago.
The public servants were implicated when Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Police Intelligence Department (PID) carried out raids against the vice syndicate in late December last year
A list that revealed the names of the syndicate's clients were among the items that were seized in the island-wide raid.
According to previous reports, the principal lives in an expensive condominium in the East with his family. Each unit in the area commands a market value of at least $1 million and residents there all drive luxury cars.
Pei Chun Public School is a government-aided primary school, located in Toa Payoh, Singapore.
In 2008, the school was awarded the 'Programme for School-based Excellence (PSE)' by MOE for the 4th time for Pei Chun’s Sports Talent Identification and Nurturing Programme.
The Straits Times reported that the principal had quit unexpectedly last December, and a message was sent to parents of students in his former school saying that he was leaving because of personal reasons and family commitments.
The principal was known in the sporting circles and was an official for a national youth team.
Prostitution is legal in Singapore, however under certain conditions such as disallowing sex with under-aged prostitutes.
Paid sex with a girl under 18 carries a maximum penalty of seven years in jail and a fine.

Shaw cinema founder's grandson and former teacher among 4 charged today

Former Singapore Environment Council executive director Howard Shaw is among the four men charged this afternoon (April 18) for sex with an underage girl.
Shaw, 41, is the grandson of Runme Shaw, founder of cinema operator Shaw Organisation.
The other three are Juerg Buergin, 40, a Swiss national who worked for a private bank here; former teacher Chua Ren Cheng, 31 and; Edward Whistler Goh Ngian Meng, 49.
On Monday, 44 men were charged in court for paying for sex with an underage prostitute.
These included a former school principal, military officers and finance industry professionals.
It is estimated that 80 men were called up by authorities last year during investigations over an online vice ring.
Paid sex with a minor carries a jail term of up to seven years and a possible fine.
