Secondly, why the hell would anyone want to go Shanghai for the Expo? The next two months' weather is shite in Shanghai. Actually make that next four months. June is horrible and summer is like yucks! Sorry if you are going there for work.

Why are you going there? I'm curious what's so great about the Expo, not trying to pick a fight with you.

I recommend Anxi which is a mid-sized town and a 2-hour bus ride away from bustling Xiamen for its rustic charm and slow pace of life. You can go to the morning market and haggle or just while away the time by sipping tea in one of the many tea shops. Anxi is famous for its tea.Most of the people there are friendly and engaging. Scenery is typical of many parts of rural China-greenery, farms, old-styled houses, sheds, farm animals, temples, mountain look-outs, rivers and streams and quaint bridges. Accomodation is very affordable at local hotels or one can stay at the Overseas Chinese Hostel (more like serviced apartment) located in the heart of town near to a hospital. There are some snooker/billiard parlours for entertainment. I stayed there on 2 different occasions sometime May/June 2005 and September/October 2009 and I found the weather agreeable. Foodwise, it's oyster omelette and the usual chinese dishes. However, a must try is a vegetable dish grown in Anxi only. It's like asparagus but many times more crunchy and nutritious. Go there and experience it yourself! Enjoy.

If there's one city or town in China you could go to for a 1 or 2 month holiday mainly to relax, and not for sight seeing, shopping, cheonging, making friends, suntanning etc, which city or town would it be?

Taking into consideration the cost of accomodation like renting a small apartment or serviced apartments or hotels, the general cost of living, the quality of the air, the amenities, the people, the crowds, communication, etc etc.

Please give your reasons together with your recommendation.

China is a great place to relax, for sight seeing, shopping, cheonging and making friends. So if you intend to go there and just do nothing in a service apartment away from the pollution/crowd/traffic, then you might as well save your money/time and stay in Singapore. Or you can choose to live in a ulu village but I'm sure you will be begging to come back to Singapore within 3 days.

What you should do is to choose 1 or more places in China which you can do all of the above. Take your time and go during the off peak seasons. Forget about the pollution and weather as long as its not life threatening. Of course you have to watch the news/weather forecast and not go places where there are droughts or heavy snow/rain etc.

I was in Xian during the May holidays and I love that place. I wish I had more time and I could have easily spend 2 weeks there. Its so full of history, fascinating sights and fabulous food. I could have spend the whole day at the awesome Shaanxi Historical Museum or just watch people go by at the foot of the ancient drum tower. I did curse like some of the tourists while climbing Mount Huashan but when I reach the peak, all the body aches seem to disappear. The body aches will cure by itself but the wonderful experinece will stay with you.

Just like one of my tour guide said: Travelling is expensive and tiring but it can be an enlightening experience and be grateful because not everyone has the resources/opportunity to experience that.

And btw the experience is very personal. Some people might think nothing of the Beijing Olympics or the Shanghai Expo but to others, there are once in a lifetime experience.

Since it's near Xiamen, is it considered in Fujian province?
Is the nearest airport Xiamen airport and then a 2 hour bus trip to Anxi?

I think Yang Shuo in Guilin looks good. An old town with fantastic scenery (judging from the pictures). Should have decent accommodation and transport since its a tourist spot. Pls go and post a FR

Just found out from my staff who is from Guilin that Yang Shuo is a very nice place. Whatever scenery that you see in Guilin, you can find it there. She suggest taking a 4 hour boat ride from Guilin city and enjoy the scenery in Li Jiang (Li River) or you can take the expressway (1.5 hours)

There are more backpacking Lao Wai there then locals but the place is not too commercialise. Its one of those places where you can stay for a month and enjoy the laidback lifestyle. Take your time to enjoy the surrounding areas. You can also pay CNY20 to a local aunty who will take you around the place in her tricycle. There are 5 star hotels as well as cheap and clean accommodation. Lots of local restaurants selling dishes from the fish caught in their Li Jiang.

This place is definitely on my list and I think its the place you are looking for.

It is! If u happen to be in Xiamen, go to the central bus station and take the one to Anxi. You'll enjoy the rural scenery on the way. Costs of makan, lodging etc very affordable there, from the Sinkaporean point of view.
