The boy-band member has already played once for Doncaster's reserves but is keen to go further by buying the club, who confirm that negotiations have begun

One Direction star Louis Tomlinson is believed to be close to a deal to buy Doncaster Rovers after the League One club confirmed that a takeover attempt is in progress.

The boy-band member was signed by Rovers last summer on a non-contract basis after impressing in a charity game and played for their reserve side in a 0-0 draw with Rotherham in February.

And reports on Monday claimed that Tomlinson was keen to take control of the club, which was relegated from the Championship at the end of 2013-14.

"Following reports in the media, the owners of Doncaster Rovers can confirm that they have been approached and dialogue has taken place with external parties about a proposed takeover," read a statement on the club's official website.

"At this stage the club is not in a position to comment further about the level and detail of those discussions but will do so as soon as it is legally possible.

"The owners are looking to ensure a swift resolution to the discussions to ensure that this does not impact adversely on the summer transfer activity.

"Any decision made by the current owners will focus on for what is best for Doncaster Rovers in both the short and long term."

Tomlinson, 22, is a lifelong Doncaster Rovers fan.
