MR WILLIAM TEO: 'Mr Cheah Keng Choe's letter ('Lesser airports do...' July 27) lamenting the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority's (ICA) inability to provide special counters for seniors is an example of the adage that when the rubber hits the road, there seems to be more ways to say 'no' when it comes to addressing the problems of the elderly. In the United States, seniors get discounts for concerts, for instance. In China, seniors get a separate lane at Immigration. The Singapore authorities and companies can do more. For a start, allow seniors to get concessionary rate on trains throughout the day and not only during off-peak periods. A person is a senior round the clock, and not only during peak public transport periods.'

The idea and logic that senior citizens should have public transport concessions only during off-peak hours is that, senior citizens are presumed to have retired. They should avoid the peak hours when going out for their leisure trips. As the younger working adults and students by necessity have to travel during peak hours, senior citizens shouldn't be encouraged or subsidised into adding to the public transport strain during peak hours. However, this logic doesn't hold in these days and times as the government is encouraging, and even deeming it necessary, for senior citizens to continue to go to work, and at salaries lower than the younger adults.
