of unity and diversity...

bro, correction made: as early as the southern song dynasty, chinese vessels already docked at borneo and java and the rest of the world. Back at that time, the north silk route was cut off by the khitan and jin tribes. Sea trade is very prosperous during the south song dynasty.

yes, thanks for highlighting that. there were southern song colonies all over the area, and many more "boat refugee" settlements after the complete conquest of song by the mongols. if archaeologists in the region were to dig deeper and wider, there would be shocking finds. and china would start claiming the whole of south east asia is theirs.

Hey you guys are. You coolies from junior colleges and national universities are the same, and for you others you need local like dogs to survive even overseas.

at the turn of a century after Raffles first arrived, Singapore was already a place filling up quickly with migrants from all over. at the turn of another century, we're still at the same phase. seems almost natural that it's in our cultural genome that we inherited this trait.

unity in diversity doesn't occur overnight, it's a painstaking process and it takes a tremendously big heart to be forgiving and to embrace diversity and it's richness. this is the second unique trait that we've inherited from our forefathers.

yes, we poke fun of each other's quirkiness and stuffs but all in the good name of fun. we knew where to draw the lines and at times the boundaries are tested every now and then but which relationship isn't dynamic anyway?

a real pity when labels like xenophobes and bigots are loosely hung over our heads and across our chests and our accusers are somewhat perpetrating these allegations they threw upon us? why the need of a race in our ICs when we're all of the human race? aren't we all Homo sapiens at the end of the day?

Best to keep studying ancient history so that there is at least some continuity mah!

from Majapahit era through the Malacca Sultanate era... what's the special significance? why not the Srivijaya era? why not the Johor Sultanate era?

the greatest threat to multi-racial, multi-culture harmony in the region is not the importation of foreigners (that has been happening for hundreds of years) but the advent of extremist religious fanatics. the moment a religion starts covering native women from their boobs down (such as christian fundamentalism in hawaii) and preventing marriage between lovers from different religions, you know it's the beginning of the end. if all women walk around the region naked up from the waist, just like it had been for hundreds of years, there will be peace and happiness. :D

You are spot on!
After the Lee & Lee era, the future threats to harmony are from Islamic and Christianity fundamentalism. I can see for myself born again christians are growing more fevour than ang mohs. The signs of growing fevour among the traditionally moderate mainstream sects is worisome.

Indian empires had once ruled most of SEA and Indo-China which China never except the north part of Vietnam during the Tang period. India would beat China to the claim.

Then Mongols can also lay claim to whole of china, japan, russia, persia and eastern europe.

mongols can only claim parts of kyūshū and islands leading to kyūshū. in both invasions, their massive fleets were destroyed by typhoons. two in a row. and they lost a majority of their invasion armies before setting ashore.
