Probably SDP or RP. They like to stir shit to score little brownie points. But it won't work because most sinkies are firmly behind the PAP! PAP! PAP!

John Tan, fellow grassloot leeder of Yang Yin, even before SDP or RP issue any comment, you as PAP IB supervisor have rushed in the politicise this tragedy on behalf of your pap masters.

Some climbers who said they were promised evacuation by helicopter have accused Malaysian authorities of a slow and chaotic response.

Trekker Amanda Peter said the local guides told her group of 21 climbers that a helicopter would pick them up on Saturday, but when it did not, they decided to walk after a frustrating nine-hour wait.

"There were risks of us dying up there of cold overnight," said the Sabah native. "The guide said we either die of waiting or we die trying. So we all chose to try walking down ourselves."

She said she saw two bodies on a flat rock on the way down.

"It really affected me as it could have been me. I was lucky to be given a chance to live," Peter said, adding that the descent was "very risky and we were all starving, dehydrated and tired but at least we tried saving ourselves".

Rescuers on Saturday escorted down to safety 137 hikers who were stuck on the mountain for up to 18 hours by the rockfalls. Dozens of aftershocks have followed the main quake.

Australian trekker Vee Jin Dumlao described chaotic scenes as survivors made their way to safety.

"[Official rescue crews] were looking rather lost really, and it was the mountain guides who did most of the work attending to the injured, strapping people into stretchers, getting ready to take them down the mountain," Dumlao told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. "The whole government emergency response was a farce," she said.

Singapore declares day of national remembrance after six students and teacher die on Mount Kinabalu

Singapore has declared Monday a day of national remembrance after six primary school students and one teacher from the city state were among 16 people killed during an earthquake that rocked Malaysia’s Mount Kinabalu.

State flags on all government buildings will be flown at half-mast and one minute of silence will be observed in what has been called “Singapore’s tragedy in Sabah”.

Malaysian officials said the death toll from the earthquake that struck on Friday morning had risen to 16, from an earlier 13, with two still missing.

The Singaporean students were part of a school excursion to the popular climbing destination, which was jolted by a 6.0-magnitude quake just as the 4,095-metre-high mountain was crowded with hikers.

The tremor triggered thunderous landslides that obliterated sections of trail on the peak, located in the state of Sabah on Borneo island.

Singapore’s government also has said a teacher and a Singaporean adventure guide perished, while another student and a teacher remained missing.

Malaysian officials have said the students were aged 12 and 13.

Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong thanked Malaysian authorities, the search and rescue teams and all others “who are working tirelessly in the rescue and recovery efforts.”

“As we grieve over the loss of these young lives, we also take heart at their striving to stretch their limits and take on new challenges,” he said, adding, “We are thankful that others survived the earthquake and have come home safely.”

Singapore Foreign Minister K. Shanmugam in a Facebook posting, called the episode “Singapore’s tragedy in Sabah”.

“Looking at the photos of these children -- such young lives, full of promise, snuffed out,” Shanmugam said.

Malaysian police say the dead or missing also include several Malaysians, and one each believed to be from China, Japan and the Philippines.

But they were yet to provide a detailed breakdown, saying the poor state of some remains made identification difficult.

Mohammad Farhan Lee Abdullah, police chief of the town of Ranau near the mountain, said body parts had been found on sections of the mountain, suggesting the awesome power of the landslides.

“They are in parts probably because of rocks and boulders falling on them but we need to do forensics first,” Mohammad Farhan said.

Singapore’s Straits Times newspaper said some of the Singaporean students were taking a route to the summit known as the Via ferrata, Italian for “iron road”, that traverses a steeply sloping rock face.

“Initial investigations show that the worst-hit area was at Via ferrata. There were many boulders that came down there,” Masidi Manjun, tourism minister for Sabah state, said.

Friday’s quake was one of Malaysia’s strongest in decades but there have not been any reports of major damage, nor any casualties outside of those at Mount Kinabalu.

Climbing has been suspended for at least three weeks so authorities can make repairs and assess safety risks.

Around 20,000 people complete the relatively easy climb each year.

Mount Kinabalu is sacred to the local Kadazan Dusun tribe.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan blamed the tragedy on a group of 10 foreigners who “showed disrespect to the sacred mountain” by posing naked at the peak last week. He said a special ritual would be conducted later to “appease the mountain spirit.”

The foreigners, who included two Canadians, two Dutch and a German national, broke away from their entourage and stripped naked before taking photos at the mountain peak on May 30, officials have said.

Five of the tourists are believed to still be in Malaysia and will be barred from leaving on the offence of gross indecency, according to police.

Act of God can claim insurance meh?

Don't think the tragic events that caused the death of 10 Singaporeans can claim insurance. It's an Act of God and insurance companies already covered their backside on that score. Only way to claim monies is to sue the school or MOE for negligence or something !

They are already receiving some compensation giving freely, without being ask in Sabah & the star reported that Penang donated another RM100,000 to the victims & it is up to the Sabah government, to disburse the money.

Have SINgaporeans, past the hat around for those kids that died??? China woman, China man ...they are so quick to give, ( remember Wang Na)....our own people???

Shame on you, SINgaporeans!

Re: Why MOE ?

most of these service vendors survive from moe funds dispensed to schools......obs, adventure consultants staffed by ex-obs employees, tour operators, education providers for enrichment classes etc...subsidised but co-funded by students. better to utilise these funds else next year reduced....

Are you referring to a Leong Kok Peng & Brother, of that "Eco-Adventure" company that operates at the MOE Dairy Farm location ?

Re: Why MOE ?

It is not his fault. .....

No one forced him into the famiLee business. He had it easy enjoying all the power & wealth without taking any of the responsibilities of his failures.
Now that many Sporeans are suffering from his mistakes, expect them to hold him accountable.

Re: Why MOE ?

while ns is intentioned to be an instrument for cheap labor, social control and loyalty-building, consequences lead to dissatisfaction among sinkie males who have to bear much of the sacrifice while seeing potential rewards and benefits frittered away by those who do not serve. the longer this imbalance of sacrifice versus rewards continues, the more fragile and fraught the pap is in relation to the sg-born male voting bloc. they're losing big in that voting segment, but they have precariously and stubbornly survived by nickeling and diming the pioneers, not rocking the female vote, and recruiting new groups of voters by generously giving away citizenships to foreigners. eventually the math will come home to roost. when push cums to shove, they may sacrifice that sacred cow, and sinkie men will be voting pap again. it's only a matter of time. ;)

The holy cow for most Sporeans is $$$. In the next GE we'll probably see what the people think about the PAP hanging onto the people's CPF.
