I really suspect something is very wrong here. First, he gave the excuse that he needs to attend to internal affairs, thus cut short his stay in Singapore, next, the First Lady actually gave the excuse that she is busy with their kids! Then, the next thing you know, the US side states that Obama is not going to give his key note speech to APEC, then his stay in Singapore was cut down even further to just one day, totally missing the traditional photo taking session.... And now, after refusing to give his key note speech in Singapore's APEC, he flew to Japan to deliver his keynote speech!

What the hell is going here?

TOKYO - US PRESIDENT Barack Obama will make a surprise early appearance at the Apec summit dinner in Singapore on Saturday, after bringing forward his departure from Japan, a US official said.

Mr Obama, on his first Asia tour, made the schedule change so he could meet the other 20 regional leaders on Saturday evening ahead of Sunday's official summit talks, a White House official said.

'We had built into the schedule a bit of extra time and some downtime, and the president decided very early this morning that he thought it was more important to get to Apec earlier and be part of the discussions tonight,' said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

The change of plans also appeared likely to rescue a hallowed tradition of Apec summits - the group photo of the 21 regional leaders in colourful, local costume.

Mr Obama's week-long tour of Asia earlier had to be compressed by a day after the president travelled to Texas to attend Tuesday's memorial service for the 13 victims of a shooting rampage at the Fort Hood military base.

In his Tokyo speech, Mr Obama hinted at the change, which did not force him to scrap any official engagements in Tokyo, saying about the Apec meet: 'I look forward to participating in that forum this evening.' -- AFP

Well, good that he made such changes but why the change?

I mean if in actual fact, he could possibly make it earlier for APEC, why did he hold it back earlier? I am just puzzled. There is an important regional meeting APEC in Singapore but he chose to fly to Japan and gave his speech there while declining to speak in Singapore earlier. It really sounds strange and irrational for any seasoned politician. It would be more important and impactful to speak to 20 leaders in APEC instead of in Japan. Unless there are very important and valid reasons for such decision to be made, no world politician would have made such move. It is a lose-lose decision; a slap on the host of APEC while depriving himself of the more important audience of regional political leaders.

This sudden change of schedule doesn't change the fact that the previous decisions were made in such a way to avoid real engagement in APEC.

Some say that it is because US has more important issues in Japan with regards to the relocation of its military base there.

But it is really weird that while the most important Asian meeting of the year was held in Singapore, he chose to go Japan. He could have gone to Japan after APEC.
