Lessons to be learnt for small states from Crimea annexation, says PM Lee
LUXEMBOURG: Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said there are lessons to be learnt for small states from Russia's annexation of Crimea.
He said small states must tend to their network of friends and have an effective foreign policy.
Mr Lee was speaking to the reporters at a joint press session with his counterpart from Luxembourg, Mr Xavier Bettel.
Both leaders stressed the importance of upholding international law.
Mr Lee said: "The only thing a small state has is words and treaties, but in addition to that because depending not (on) the goodwill and good faith of others, we also must have the wherewithal to defend ourselves... you must be prepared to stand up and defend your position, if necessary, with our lives."
Mr Bettel said: "We do not accept to be considered as a place where people can do things which are not legal, and we exactly have the same position that it's important to have international rules on the global level."
Mr Lee is visiting Luxembourg after attending the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague, Netherlands.
It is Mr Lee's first official visit to Luxembourg, underscoring the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.
Bilateral trade between the two countries grew more than 60 per cent last year.
Both leaders agreed more can be done and that cooperation should not only be expanded bilaterally, but with their wider neighbouring regions as well.
Mr Lee expressed his appreciation for Luxembourg's support of the ratification of the European Union-Singapore Free Trade Agreement.
He also congratulated Mr Bettel on Luxembourg's successful election to the United Nations Security Council.
Like Singapore, Luxembourg is also a small city state with a population of slightly more than half a million people.
The two countries have close cooperation, both bilaterally and at the international fora, like at the United Nations, and Forum of Small States. - CNA/de
