NSF's murder charge likely to be reduced to culpable homicide
SINGAPORE: A full-time national serviceman who was facing a murder charge for stabbing a mother-of-two is not likely to face the death penalty.
The prosecution on Wednesday indicated that it will reduce the murder charge that 23-year-old Soh Wee Kian was facing to one of culpable homicide if he pleads guilty.
This was revealed on what was to have been the first day of the Soh's murder trial.
He was accused of murdering Madam Hoe Hong Lin, 32, at the Mandai Tekong Park in Woodlands Drive 50 on September 22, 2010.
Instead of facing the death penalty, Soh could now be jailed for life and caned, or jailed up to 20 years with a fine or caning.
Soh also faced three other charges of slashing three women between January and May that year.
It is expected that he will plead guilty on August 20 to the culpable homicide charge as well as to one charge of voluntarily causing grievous hurt.
The remaining two charges will be taken into consideration.
