A man was arrested yesterday night after a manhunt involving at least 30 police officers from Clementi Police Division and the Special Operations Command at the old Institute of Technical Education building in Clementi on Monday night.
Shin Min Daily News reported that four Special Operations Command (SOC) vehicles, along with several SOC officers, were despatched to the unused building at about 11pm to search for a man. Sniffer dogs from the Police K9 Unit were also sent to the scene at Jalan Lempeng.
Mr Zhang, a 50-year-old resident who lives nearby, told reporters that he heard about four to five loud 'bangs' that sounded like gunshots, and looked out of his home to see the SOC vehicles driving along the road.
He described the atmosphere then as tense, as the officers filed out of the vehicles and stormed the former ITE building. Dogs from the K9 unit followed after to search the premises.
The Chinese evening daily also added that police were at the scene until 2am as they traced the whereabouts of a man suspected to be involved in the incident.
A 20-year-old Chinese man was eventually arrested at 10pm last night after he was spotted trying to flee from the police. He was described as wearing a dark T-shirt and shorts. According to The New Paper, the national serviceman had been absent without official leave.
