<!-- /byline -->SINGAPORE — Singapore founding father Lee Kuan Yew resigned from the Cabinet on Saturday, ceding leadership to a younger generation after his party’s worst election result since independence in 1965.
Lee and fellow former prime minister Goh Chok Tong said in their joint resignation statement they wanted to leave a clean path for younger leaders.

<!--/article-side-rail-->“A younger generation wants to be more engaged in the decisions which affect them,” they said. “After a watershed general election, we have decided to leave the cabinet and have a completely younger team of ministers to connect to and engage with this young generation.”
The 87-year old Lee was prime minister from 1959 to 1990 after which Goh took over until 2004. Lee had been known as Minister Mentor while Goh was Senior Minister since 2004, and both won parliament seats in the May 7 election.
The ruling People’s Action Party won 60 percent of the vote, down from 67 percent in 2006 and 75 percent in 2001. The Workers Party won six seats, the most the opposition has held since independence.
Lee’s resignation marks the first time since 1959 that he hasn’t been in Singapore’s Cabinet and hails the coming-of-age of his son, 59-year-old Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
PAP leaders after the election have said they were surprised at the level of resentment some voters felt toward the government for its perceived arrogance and lack of collaboration with citizens. The Southeast Asia island is one of the world’s richest countries, but soaring housing prices amid a surge of foreign workers have left poorer Singaporeans struggling.
Last month, Lee Kuan Yew warned voters in the Aljunied district that they would “repent” for five years if they voted for opposition candidates. Prime Minister Lee later distanced himself from his father’s comments, but the opposition won all five of Aljunied’s seats.
“The time has come for a younger generation to carry Singapore forward in a more difficult and complex situation,” Lee and Goh said. “The Prime Minister and his team of younger leaders should have a fresh clean slate.”

Now you see how important Singapore is to the world? If the result is any worse, you think American investors would want to invest their billion dollars in Singapore? You think the Americans would want to berth their aircraft carrier in Changi?

Unfortunately the younger generation does not see this. Why must they give way to the younger voters who are so impatient for wealth and power and success?

Poor Eric Tan - all his experience and hard work is gone. The wall in Aljunied is cracking even before their cement is dry. 54% of voters in Aljunied have been conned. 43% of the voters in Marine Parade have been conned as well!

America loves dictators. If not they would have imposed sanctions on Singapore after the E. Hank Hendriksson affair.

Your 1st point: USA are the ultimate kingmakers. They will also work with anyone if it furthers their interest. Since Singapore is strategic, their wealth will keep pouring in. (Is USA wealthy?)

Your 2nd point: The assumption is that the younger voters are crucial on this. I met younger voters who voted PAP. I met people who were PAP supporters who voted opposition. That assumption is convenient, presumptious and not necessarily based on truth.

Your 3rd point: If not for the peoples of Aljunid, change would not be bought into the PAP. Therefore the peoples of Aljunid should be lauded. The WP is the most credible opposition party. From a next-to-useless party, they become the de facto voice of change. The Marine Parade voters are to be congratulated as well.

Eric Tan has affected the credibility of LTK. Because a number identified LTK as hardworking and capable which makes it easier to vote for WP. What happens is that LTK now needs to learn to be a leader of men. His contemporaries KJ and CST failed miserably as leaders. Not even JBJ did well as a leader.

Eric Tan did a disservice. Not just to WP. He could have been part of the winning teams in the next GRC. Now he may spend his time trying to pull WP down. To be fair to him, it is not known how LTK will react if Eric Tan is the Secretary-General and LTK is passed over in favor of Gerald Giam.

Sylvia Lim won back the goodwill and confidence with her decision to go full-time.

The WP is trying its best. Let's help them to get over this blip. If you are a friend of Eric Tan, perhaps he may listen to you and publicly re-express the confidence he felt in the WP. The WP accepts him back. He is part of the East Coast GRC once again.

Excuse me, please stop spreading your thrush laden misinformation on the forum. How does this article indicate how Singapore is important to the world? What had this got to do with them berthing their aircraft carrier in Changi?

With the lax rules within the SGX, listing fly by night companies (S-shares) has been so famous that SG is known as one of the best places to list, comparable to AIM... for SHIT companies. Our banking secrecy laws are on par if not greater than the Swiss. As one of the premier money laundering sites globally, it is only a matter of time that things come to a head and the US starts putting pressure on us.

He is just retiring from cabinet. Both SM and MM should have retired from political life ages ago.
