South Korea's army chief resigns
14 December 2010

The head of South Korea's army, Gen Hwang Eui-don, has resigned, officials at the defence ministry have said.
The reasons for his resignation have not been given, but he had faced criticism over capital gains he made through a Seoul property deal.
His resignation comes amid rising tensions over North Korea's shelling of a Southern island.
Former Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young resigned over the shelling, which killed four people.
Gen Hwang was promoted to the army's chief of staff in June this year.

"Gen Hwang offered to retire following media reports about his property investment because he judged it was inappropriate for him to stay on the post at a time when he has to lead the reform of the army," Yonhap news agency quoted an unnamed ministry of defence official as saying.
There have been reports in the South Korean media that he was suspected of buying a property in Seoul in 2002 with advance knowledge that building restrictions would soon be eased.
The general has denied the allegations, saying he had no knowledge of the impending changes.
