Alan is balanced and thats a liability, also not interested in politics more so because he would not bend. He however is very strong on social and society issues and can be tenacious. Unfortunately Editor is a political appointment. No 2 is usually an apolitical appt and thats why he is there. Probably move on to Sunday Times in his sunset years for commentary and I think he will do a wonderful job keeping society sane with the occasional barbs on overzealous grassroots harebrained schemes.
To be frank, Felix is politically subservient unfortunately too extreme and makes the PAP look bad. Too many years covering SAF when it was prime asset politically.
Agree on Cherian. Patrick may however take on something else as Han has a long way to go. You may be right on being away for too long.

Race-wise, Cherian won't do. Ed-in-chief is Indian, so they can't have ST editor also as Indian. Otherwise, I would have suggested Alan John, who, I think is immediately below Han.
Also, Cherian has been out of the game too long. You can't quit journalism and then hope to be parachuted back in. Years of lost experience makes you uncompetitive.
Why? Is Patrick Daniel or Fook Kwang leaving or something?
