SINGAPORE — Following a standoff near Woodlands Checkpoint on Friday (Jan 5) afternoon, the police have arrested an armed suspect who allegedly committed a robbery at knifepoint in the Bukit Timah area.
In a statement, the police said that they were alerted to a case where a woman was made to get out of her car at knifepoint along Upper Bukit Timah Road at 1.32pm.
A 43-year-old man – suspected to be under the influence of drugs – was arrested after he crashed the car into a lamp post just before the Woodlands Checkpoint at 1.45 pm.
In a video of his standoff with the police that has been making the rounds on Facebook and Whatsapp, the man is seen wielding what looks like a sickle and being surrounded by officers.

The man who shot the video, Malaysian Tan Chian Seng, 37, said he was driving into Singapore when he witnessed the incident. According to him, the man started swinging the sickle at about eight officers from the police and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority after he got out of the car.
Mr Tan, a contractor who lives in Johor Baru and works in Singapore, later sent the video to his wife, who uploaded it onto her Facebook page.
The police said suspected drug paraphernalia, controlled drugs, a knife, an axe and a sickle were found in the suspect’s possession.
The man has been arrested for armed robbery, possession of offensive weapons and suspected drug related offences. TODAY understands no officer was hurt. Investigations are ongoing.
