Alvin Tan

At the 3rd China-India-Singapore Dialogue on Higher Education hosted by NUS
on Thu (8 Nov), former top civil servant Ngiam Tong Dow was asked on the
sidelines by reporters to comment on Alvin Tan, the Malaysian ASEAN scholar who
stirred controversy for posting sexually explicit photos and videos of himself
and his girlfriend on a blog last month.

Mr Ngiam replied without hesitation, “This ASEAN scholar, bloody joker, we
should sack him.”

While he acknowledged the need for overseas talents, Mr Ngiam also argued
against having too many foreign undergrads on Singapore-sponsored
scholarships.

He asked, “That is very unfair… That is nonsense… you have to import talent
but how many of them want to stay back here?”

Mr Ngiam said that instead of giving scholarships to foreigners who might not
sink roots here, the country’s resources could be better used to help
Singaporean undergraduates, some of whom have to work part-time to support
themselves financially.

Meanwhile NUS said in an earlier statement that it had taken disciplinary
actions against Alvin Tan (‘NUS refuses to reveal disciplinary action taken against
exhibitionist-cum-scholar
‘).

NUS said, “After considering the seriousness of the offence, Alvin’s account
presented to the Board of Discipline (BOD), and all mitigating factors, the BOD
had decided on the disciplinary actions to be taken. The University had informed
Alvin about the BOD’s decision.”

However, NUS did not want to give details exactly on what kind of
disciplinary actions was taken against him. A spokesperson said all matters
relating to NUS disciplinary proceedings are confidential.

I have 2 malaysian relatives who took the asean scholarship and have been here since the 80s. they have settled down and done well for themselves. but at every family gathering in malaysia they will the first to badmouth their host country, giving a thousand and one reasons why they will NEVER take up sinkie citizenship.

Withdraw scholarship but let him continue to studies in NUS. Most moderate approach. I doubt any self respecting law firm would hire such a self absorbed joker anyway.

The fact that they kept it confi means they didn't sack him la. What else?

He may be an embarrassment in Singapore. But the MCA MP from the Barisan National was quoted in the press saying that he is proud of Alvin. Malaysia can accommodate many more Alvins. Remember their middle-aged MCA President was video-taped in bed in a hotel with a woman other than his wife?

In Bolehland, everything is boleh!

A populist rhetoric to fool the masses. No more BigLaw for Alvin, for that I am certain. No point lynching the dead. That should keep the libs happy for a while.

Singapore welcomes all sorts, Alvin is welcomed to stay if he can. :)

M Ravi may be attracted in hiring this chap.

Yes. They share a penchant for public attention. Not a bad thing. Makes a closed society less narrow minded.

Other than desire for attention which cannot compare with GMS, Ravi needs a good partner. A good bang!

Many people are waiting for the old fart to kick the bucket and fuck his useless son. This is when PAP will split and Singapore can relive a proper life again.

You are very right myo539. You brought up a very valid point. Till today, I thought that their press was pro-government.

Ravindran did it to Vijandran ala CIA/KGB style.........

Over there their newspapers are very free to reveal such sordid details contrary to what people say about the government control over the news media.

You are absolutely right that in Boleh-land everything boleh, even people like Ling Liong Sick have been hauled in court.

The Malaysian also used the ISA (now repealed) very sparingly. Infact Mahathir never ever held any political detainee, including Karpal Singh under the ISA for a long time. Kamunting Prison is more like a boot-camp for "recalcitrant politicians".
