Btw, I first read Lao Tze when I was fifteen years old. That time, the Tao Te Ching was a very tiny booklet and I thought it was all fucking crap.
Then at 20 years I read that again and I thought that to be crap.

Then at 30 years old,I read the Tao Te Ching which grown thicker and thicker by the years with all kinds of shit writers adding in to copywrite what the fuck they writing.

Then at 40 years old, the Tao Te Ching grown to size of telephone directory and even more crap.

Then at 50 years old, I got back to the thin book I first read and slowly grasp what was written and then I knew that 15 year old reading that book got a fucking head full of crap instead.

I still trying to understand now what the fucking book all about even though I could read Chinese very well now when I could not read Chinese at all until I taught myself how to read Chinese 5 years ago when I was 65 years old.

And honestly, anyone who tell you they know is telling you crap.
Especially those who thicken the Tao Te Ching with load of their rubbish masquerading as their interpretations.

Haha! I went through a similar process, but no way I can go through a telephone directory so I just don't even try, thin book challenging enough. So I went to translated comics instead to find easy summarization. Also I try not to read it to understand it, but feel it. Like what you wrote above, it means to me there is no point trying to form a solid frame of reference for understanding, just feel it.

I just look for whatever I can glean from it. And anyone who thickens what they say really doesn't know crap. Einstein quote : "If you can't explain it to a six year old, you don't understand it yourself."

For eg, all was created from nothingness was the 1st thing that hit me. It's also modern science's interpretation of the beginning of the universe. once I read that, I got hooked. no other philosophy comes as close to agreeing with science without resorting to a mysterious unseen creator, that's why I like it best, but of course this is just an opinion la....

Happy to discuss with anyone, anytime. few people bother even looking him up in the 1st place. everybody runs to confucius instead who to me is like a circus act.

I will say the best written explanation I ever got on LaoTze or Tao Te Ching, be that in Chinese or English will be works by Tsai Chih Chung
