New developments to share

This really require both countries to sit down and have a common committed vision.
This is not easy.
Both sides will want something in return and they will to do some horse trading provided the incentive is strong enough.

Currently maybe Malaysia is the only party that's initiating most of the discussions. Don't really see Singapore actively participating.

Kinda think it's pretty one sided now.

The Iskandar project seems to have not a very focused leadership. Dunno whether the state, federal or even the sultan is on the same page or not. Also how about the private investments.. seems like maybe they more interested in going IPO then forming long-term development plans. Haha.

Just my own observations and opinions.

Dun think it will benefit SG much. Main beneficiaries r e land owners n cronies awarded e contracts.

Malaysians benefit more. To fill the gap of lower skilled workers. And not forgetting they are more mobile than Singaporeans

I would say currently it might be the Malaysian PR working in Singapore who is benefiting.

So long as they can afford the transportation costs into Singapore to work view should be able to benefit from the Iskandar project.
Singapore spending power with Malaysian inborn benefits. Best of both worlds.

never before happened. 200 people rioting in little india. police cars overturned, ambulance set on fire.

I feel safer in jb, nowadays. :D

Quite true. And better don't let people know that we're Sgreans when overseas.
I believe we are one of the most hated country now, thanks to this present PAP and their cronies.

People with pent up pressure and took opportunity to lash back at the authorities. Does not look good in safe and peaceful Singapore.
The accident is just the spark to the entire incident. This is the result of social problems that come along with immigrants.

Indeed. I find peace when I cruised around JB. It brings back memories of good old Singapore in 1980-1990s.

BUT at the current pace of development, JB will become Singapore now in 20 years' time. Enjoy the good times while it lasts, just like the cheap stuffs in JB now are no longer so cheap.

the riot came as a shock to many of us but looking at it from a positivist's point of perspective, this serves as a wake up call to the local authorities that something more serious than a non-violent labour strike can happen in SG and that they need to be prepared well to hande this kind of situation in future

Just to share the Malaysian experience:

Malaysia has the same source of immigrants / FW ie Bangladesh, India. Therefore most of these problems are somewhat similar.

Disappearing after gaining entry into the country, leaving their employers stuck with their visas and levies.
FW marrying local gals hoping to get citizenships, even locals and foreigners fight over these social issues.
Locals harboring the FW legally and illegally on tourist passes
Medical and unchecked contagious disease problems
Fights among their own communities. There are even gangs who protect their own kinds.
Many cases of robberies and theft as they do not have jobs especially employers shun them.
Set up petty stalls and trying to sell their wares while carving out their territories. FW tend to go back to these places as goods and food is familiar.

Worst case if they are caught, they be deported and go back to where they come from. Couldn't be any worse than that.
Yes, the authorities can catch them, but they are just like roaches. You shut them here, they set up elsewhere.

Malaysia's tallest condo to be ready in 2017
The Star/Asia News Network

Monday, Dec 09, 2013

JOHOR BARU - In just seven months, 50% of the Astaka @ 1 Bukit Senyum, the tallest high-end residential tower development project in the region, has been snapped up by buyers.

The project, which has a total of 438 units, commenced in early July this year and is expected to be ready by 2017.

Its developer Astaka Padu Sdn Bhd is selling each unit between RM2mil (S$772,000) and RM8.45mil.

Astaka Padu chief executive officer Datuk Zamani Kassim said another 20% of the units have been booked while waiting for the sales and purchase agreements to be signed.

"The Astaka, which means 'royal pavilion' in English, is already on its way to becoming a new landmark here.

"Once completed, the Astaka, standing proudly at 304m above sea level, will be the tallest residential tower not only in the country but throughout the region," he said during the official launch of the Astaka by Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar here yesterday.

He said the Astaka is being developed on the site of the former Hockey Stadium and Johor Baru Indoor Stadium.

"The towers will house 438 luxury suites, including penthouse duplexes. The units will have a built-up area ranging from 2,207 sq ft to 5,408 sq ft. Each floor will house four units.

"The projected gross development value of The Astaka will be more than RM1bil and will be the forerunner in the Johor Baru city transformation plan," he said.

The project will have a first phase of mixed development, which includes two condominium towers.

Zamani added that the contractor appointed, Penta Ocean Construction Company Ltd of Japan, is well-known in the construction industry, especially in Singapore, with projects including the ION Orchard, the Esplanade Theatre Bay and Marina Promenade.

There are larger issues with foreign workers enclave, their living conditions, salary matters etc. The tepid police response (or lack of) and clear lack of info to the public when the riots first broke out, should and will be debated thoroughly in the next Cabinet meeting and among the public.

No need to over-analyze these riots.
In Malaysia (or maybe just my hometown) they have this saying, "H*tam mabuk, suka gaduh".
Time and time again, i have seen "these" guys drinking heavily, hanging out, getting rowdy and the party only stops when someone gets sent to the hospital.
