Some netizens from the “Boycott TNP” Facebook are mulling launching a class action suit against SPH tabloid The New Paper (TNP) and its Deputy Editor Melvin Singh.
Melvin Singh has come under intense public scrutiny and criticisms over a series of misleading articles written about the opposition in the last two weeks or so which may have caused them to lose crucial votes in the election held last Saturday.
In an article published on 27 April 2011, Melvin Singh questioned the sexual inclination of SDP candidate for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC Dr Vincent Wijeysingha based on a forum he attended last year discussing gay issues.
On 1 May, Melvin Singh wrote another misleading article alleging that Dr Chee Soon Juan had ‘attempted’ to start a ‘march’ after a rally in Jurong East. Video evidence later revealed that Dr Chee was simply shaking hands with his supporters.
Then, he tried to wriggle himself out of trouble by writing a ‘clarification’ on 5 May, quoting another SDP candidate Michelle Lee as saying that she will leave SDP if the party gets involved in ‘illegal marches’ again. It turned out that Ms Lee has never uttered those words as well.
TNP then launched a smear campaign against Nicole Seah’s running mate Spencer Ng in Marine Parade GRC, accusing him of sexual indiscretions during his stint as a teacher just two days before polling day which may have caused Nicole votes among women voters. The PAP team won only 56.5 percent of the votes in Marine Parade GRC.
Melvin Singh has a long history of indulging in gutter journalism to smear opposition leaders and members to please his political masters. Last year, he even resorted to publishing baseless pornographic materials from a notorious porn site in order to smear TR.
From these controversies, it does appear that Melvin Singh lacks basic morals, ethics and integrity to be a journalist. Our opposition leaders and candidates are fighting tooth and nail to serve us. The very least we can do is to protect them against such ‘poisoned darts’ shot from behind by SPH journalists like Melvin Singh.
A lawyer we spoke to said such a move (class action suit) will be “unprecedented”, but it is worth a try as even if the suit is thrown out eventually, the negative publicity it stirs will suffice to draw public attention to TNP’s brand of gutter journalism so that Singaporeans will think twice before believing what it reports.
In the meantime, the public backlash against TNP continues to gather storm as a the “Boycott TNP” Facebook now has more “likes” than the official TNP Facebook page itself.
