Near complete news blackout on flash floods at Novena and MacPherson
August 12th, 2010 | Author: Your Correspondent
The state media has imposed a near complete news blackout on flash floods in at least two areas yesterday – Novena and MacPherson to save the PAP regime its blushes during the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
The Straits Times published a short article yesterday afternoon calling on readers to email them details and photos of flash floods and traffic disruptions, but carried only one paragraph of the flooding at Thomson today. Channel News Asia did not even report on it.

Perhaps SPH and Mediacorp journalists dare not venture out to take photos of the flooding anymore after their co-worker Mr Shafie Goh was handcuffed publicly by an police officer ostensibly for taking photos of flooding at Upper Bukit Timah a few weeks ago.
The selective coverage and censorship is reminiscent of the Chinese media’s cover up of the “Sanlu poison milk powder” saga before the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games.
With the Singapore media in full throttle to hype up the YOG, all negative news as such are conveniently swept under the carpet as if nothing has happened.
The sycophantic, shameless and spineless PAP-controlled media, which is ranked a pathetic 133th in terms of press freedom by respected international media watchdog “Reporters without Borders” can expect a “downgrade” in its ranking this year.
