My Friend Jocelyn

Fortunately, I don't have to worry about that for my kids.

Don't know which school you or your children have gone to. Only children who cannot follow the lessons would go rote memorizing to go through.

I think ASH007 is right...most SG schools dont have time to teach their students...they depend on doing assessments after assessments to drill their students to do well inexams

Yes, and remedial, extra tuition classes don't exactly teach the kid anything new either. If they don't do well the first time, they essentially got a second round of memorising. Remidial classes should be called rote learning classes.

changing too often is also not good

This is just the process. Just have to deal with it, like some people in Canada have to go for the sales items at the stores, otherwise it is too expensive. Tell me where is there no change? Anyway most changes don't affect the same cohort.

UK, for instance, have been relying on GCE to grade their students (incidentally their GCE certifications are of much lower level than Singapore's) and now they want to change it because it was too simple.

I understand in Australia there is no equivalence of GCE. As a result, to enter some degree courses you need to pass an unrelated degree course just to gain the pre-requisite entry qualifications. You ask me. This makes very little sense.

But I guess it is a difference in viewpoint. Some want the process to be easy. The other does not mind to be challenged a little.

true..the sad part is that remedial is now for all students..used to be that remedial was for weak students who cant grasp the concepts..those who already did well shd not be compelled to attend remedial classes

Its called the HSC. Don't bash what you don't know. The only course and Uni I know that does that is the medical degree from University of Sydney. Where to enter the program you need a degree and pass through an interview and exam process. In exchange, instead of getting your medical doctorate in 6 years you can have it in 4 years. The reason is that they find that most students that scored well will be pressured to do the medical course as its the hardest to get in. However, most do not have the "heart" or "passion" to be a doctor and regretted it afterwards. Its just an additional step to get better quality doctors instead of, I scored well in the HSC hence I'm going to be a doctor.

change can be good and we shd not deny change...but change for the sake of changing is no good.

an example..SG used to have Police Stations...then when jayakumar took over a s Home Minister, he did away with PS and changed it to neighourhood Police posts and cycling patrols...then when WKS took over from Jaya..he did away with Police Posts and reverted to police stations...so what did we achieve? Nothing

But, and this is where environment, society comes into play in SIngapore. If my kid don't go to the remedial classes they will fall behind argument. See how its not just MOE or the government, but the whole society and environment that is wrong!

society and environment are very much moulded by the pap and media. we have two generations who grew up believing the pap and what they read from MSM

nature vs nurture...no one really knows the answer.

Exam smart doesnt mean better in living

If you can handle the situation even though it is a different system and a different environment it tells you something.

Recently, one local student won top prize in a Maths Olympics and his team won second prize overall I believe, admittedly first time we have done it but Singapore typically faired better than some larger countries like France, UK and Australia as well. Typically the Chinese are in the top one or two. USA is also among the top but not as often as China. If you are not aware what these competitions entail, you will say it is academic and rote learning but it is not. You need an agility of the mind to find the best solutions to the problems or you may have no answer at all. It is that tough a test. There are other competitions including technological ones and Singapore students generally fair quite well.

aus has 20+ million people..SG has 5+million,

Aus excels in many areas, SG is struggling with low productivity and still believes that having casinos and importing cheap labour is the right way to move the country forward.

winning at one maths olympiad or winning a science quiz is not important. dont let the media distract us from the important issues...how our citizens are struggling and how life is difficult in SG ..

what's important is how our country is moving forward and our overall achievements

Depends on who's 走光. If it's HJ, peeking up her skirt is like breaking a mirror: seven years of bad luck.

Ha ha... mostly likely true.

If caught upskirting HJ, sure kana Changi Hotel jialart jialart one :o

Maybe 7 years also not enough.

What is this betrayal you talked about other than the investment of your money? Was there something else?

There is (perhaps more like was now) an unwritten social contract - the government knows best and is doing everything in the best interest for Singapore. Leave everything to the government.

That is one reason why many Singaporeans allowed themselves to be so thoroughly de-politicize and focus on the bread and butter issues. So thorough was the process that we have adults from the best schools in Singapore saying that the PAP is Singapore. They forgot that the 超级白 is only a political party. The 超级白 is definitely not Singapore.

Looking back, with all the various policies in place - the relentless drive for GDP with the stop at 2 policy etc, the pegging of their salary to GDP, and now the relentless welcoming of foreigners at the tax payer's and Singaporeans expense to increase the GDP. etc etc All so self serving. What a betrayal!

What else do you need clarification?

makes sense...but sydney is no laid back place

Tracy, Sydney more laid back than Singapore. I can walk around eng eng cheng cheng without all the rush or having somebody breathing down my neck.

My son, in one of the G8 uni, is having his exam soon. His 1st paper is on 30 Oct.

Guess what is he doing now? Gaming. Not laid back? I don;t know what to say. No pressure at all.
