Chinese Malaysians asking for too much
By Zaini Hassan

WHAT else do Chinese Malaysians want? Let us put aside the reasons why they do not support the current government in Kuala Lumpur. Let us study first what else they want.

For that, we have to go back to history. The Chinese came to Malaya to seek opportunities. They had lived a hard life in mainland China for hundreds of years. Like the whites who migrated to the American continent because it was the land of opportunity, the Chinese migrated to Malaya to make their fortunes in this bountiful land.

The strategy of their forebears has borne fruit. The Chinese have attained what they wanted. They now live in the lap of luxury in this land of opportunity called Malaysia.

In fact, it is not only in Malaysia that they have attained what they wanted. They have even gained full control of Singapore.

Singapore is not their original country. The Singapore Chinese and the Malaysian Chinese were originally boat people. The difference is that those who landed in Singapore managed to gain full control of Singapore, but those who landed in Malaysia did not manage to control Malaysia.

In Malaysia, the Chinese live in peace with the Malays, the indigenous people and the Indians. In comparison, in Singapore, the Chinese control politics and the Government. In Malaysia, the Malays still control politics and the government.

The systems of both governments are the same, but it is vice versa: The Malays dominate in Malaysia while the Chinese dominate across the Causeway.

In contrast, the Malays in Singapore and the Chinese in Malaysia are very different. The Malays in Singapore lead ordinary lives while the Chinese in Malaysia lead lives that are 'more than ordinary'.

In fact, former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad once stated that if all the Chinese-owned buildings in Kuala Lumpur were lifted from the map, only the buildings in Kampung Baru, a Malay area, would remain in the city.

All the other buildings are owned by Chinese Malaysians. The well-known shopping centres in Malaysia are owned by the Chinese.

The Chinese Malaysians are fantastic. They control all the cities and major towns in peninsular Malaysia, as well as Sabah and Sarawak.

They produce the largest number of, and the most successful, professionals. The school system of the Chinese Malaysians is the best among similar school systems in the world.

The Chinese account for most of the students studying in the best private colleges in Malaysia. The Malays can gain admission into only government-owned colleges of ordinary reputation.

With regard to corporate and private organisations, it is the Chinese who dominate. The Malays number just a few; most of them are low-level employees.

In fact, knowing Mandarin is a pre-requisite for applying for jobs in these organisations.

Finally, an annual survey by the Malaysian Business magazine has found that eight of the 10 richest people in Malaysia are Chinese. The following is the list of the 10 richest people in Malaysia:

Mr Robert Kuok Hock Nien
Mr Tatparanandam Ananda Krishnan
Tan Sri Lee Shin Cheng
Tan Sri Teh Hong Piow
Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay
Tan Sri Quek Leng Chan
Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary
Puan Sri Lee Kim Hua
Tan Sri Tiong Hiew King
Tan Sri Vincent Tan Chee Yioun

This is the reality in Malaysia, my beloved country. Is the current government, which has been in power for 52 years, cruel and totalitarian? What else do the Chinese Malaysians want?

I think I know, and I think you know too.

This column first appeared in Utusan Malaysia on April 28.

the chinese just want the malaysian govt to just let the chinese do business without interference. chinese are just born businessman . give the malays a acres of land, he sells it to the chinese. give him a million and the chinese would help him spent it. . when mahathir wrote : "the malay dilemma "he pointed out the problems facing the malays but after 30 years in power he couldnt solve the problem facing the malays. he exacerbate it with the NEP.

...... when mahathir wrote : "the malay dilemma "he pointed out the problems facing the malays but after 30 years in power he couldnt solve the problem facing the malays. he exacerbate it with the NEP.

They are now exacerbating it further by reverting to the teaching of the Maths and Science subjects in Bahasa Malay in schools. This will be a great setback for the future generations of their Malay citizens as they will not progress, unless they further their studies in private institutions or overseas.

On an engineering aspect, let's face it: where does one finds the operation and maintenance manuals of machineries from established manufacturers (from Japan to Taiwan, Europe to the USA, etc) in the Malay language?

Who are the bumiputras?

The original inhabitants of Malaysia - Malaya, Sabah and Sarawak - are actually the Orang Asli. They are the Semang (Negrito), Senoi, and Proto-Malay. They include the "Sakai", the Temiar, the Semai, & the Jakun (of Malaya), the Kayaks, the Dusuns & the Kadazans (of Sabah and Sarawak).

The present day bumis are early immigrants - minangkabau, Javanese, Ambonese, Achenese who come from the Southeast Asian archipelago claimed that Malaysia is theirs. These immigrants tried to dissociate themselves with the aborigines because they are a little more civilised.

All of us remember Parameswara - the Hindu Prince from Sumatra - the Raja of Singapura - who fled to Malacca and started to colonise the peninsula.

These so-called present day bumis are like the whites of Australia - they are ancestors of immigrants who came over and usurped the land and resources of the indigenous people. These "bumis" are trying to change history when they are confronted with fierce competition from later immigrants such as the Chinese, Indians and Angmohs (British). Present day Malaysia - with its richer resources and people - even tried to claim that the Indonesian batik and dances are theirs!!! The Indonesians gave them a good lesson on culture.

Bottom line is :

Chinese, "Malays" and Indians are sama-sama - OneMalaysia!!! Malaysia - apa-apa pun boleh????

The Orang Asli are actually people related to the inhabitants of Papua and New Guinea.

Malays should stop calling Chinese "cheenas" due to the fact that their ancestors originated from China.

Great posts contributed by everyone. Thank you guys. I feel that Chinese are by no means small and like the Jews are intelligent and industrious and could achieve whatever they set out to socially and economically.

But I think probably also together with the Jews the Chinese are also much more interested in money and business (the direct control of) than in politics. If they wanted I have full confidence they can be leaders of not just Singapore but also Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia etc. Even the Chinese triads in Malaysia are more powerful than the Malay and Indian ones and the Chinese businessmen there can even be appointed Datuks which is already something quite remarkable.

This is remarkable.

What is the pt of the article again?

Is it trying to put the blame on the chinese again?

Anyway this article makes me proud and chinese should be proud. Yet i feel that in this country many chinese hate themselves and their own culture etc, other races are jealous and always use racism on chinese. An example of such a self hater is tony chat but then again his own failures are due to himself not his race, culture or country.

Very soon Penang will overtake KL as capital of Malaysia. If the DAP manage well the state.

SG Chinese have done well until now.... the doors have been opened by the MIW and now flooded with PRC Chinese, it is just different. Great post though!

Those matlaysian should thank the Chinese there. They are law abiding and hardworking, much better than the typical relax one corner mat.

Once in KL, I saw a mat cab driver sitting at a shelter and reading newspapers. Told him I wanna take cab to hotel, and say use meter. He shake his head and say no meter. Useless bugger. Rather read newspapers and earn $0 than make a honest living. That kinda sums up the situation facing the country.

That's because he has already made enough profits for the day by not going meter. That's why he was sitting there and reading his newspapers.

Bro Krafty might just want to find out from him the secrets of his success.

LOL that's a good one reminds me of those racism threads some time back blaming everyone else except themselves.

In a free society, politics is all about representation. As long as the Chinese does not form a majority, there is no way that they can gain full control of the political arena in Malaysia.

Yes, the Chinese are known for their intelligence and willing to work hard but first of all, they must be given the opportunity to do so. Therefore, they should be grateful that opportunites are given to them by the natives to accumulate wealth. Giving you an example, there was once a thriving Chinese community in Calcutta but after nany restrictions were imposed on them, they were forced to move elsewhere to continue working for their money...

this guy sure talk c@rk and is an !diot. He did NOT mentioned the billions of $$$ the UMNOputras siphoned from Petronas through corruption!!!! For every one Chinese millionaire tehre are easily 100 UMNO putra millionaire with $ in swiss accounts. At lest these guys he mentioned earned money the decent legal way through hard work. In fact Robert Kouk probably earned his money in HK from property deals and NOT malaysia. He should get his facts right and ask what happened to the BILLIONS in money that (US$32 BILLIONS) that pertonas pay UMNO and the government EVERY YEAR!!!!! He is just trying to skew facts. Sure the common Malay are poor BUT there are thousands of these UMNO princelings who are millionaires and trying to pass the blame for the poor common man poverty on the Chinese. This man is an @sshole writing a racist article and trying to justify all the corrupt money politics in UMNO and government . he should look into a mirror and he would then see the crook that he is trying to blame:oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo::oIo:

Actually i feel that TS read wrongly or maybe the person writing the article did not word it properly.

The writer is not writing in context of malaysian chinese gaining control of sg.

He's referring to the chinese race gaining control of singapore and controlling wealth in malaysia.

Basket u see another article blaming chinese ppl for their own failures. Isn't malaysia openly racist and yet hey malays are poorer than chinese, what does that say?

How to compare malays in sg with chinese in malaysia?

Actually this article highlights their flaws even greater. It shows that chinese ppl can succeed under adversity and in lands they were not originally from. It shows they can succeed even in racist conditions. It further shows that malays cannot do the same and in fact can only get rich thru corruption.

How about nehs who invite their entire village to their company to work?

The Malaysian CHinese no doubt are hardworking because they do not have the security net over their head unlike the Singaporeans with CPF and what's not. But overall the Singaporean CHinese are more obedient due to their MIW overlords' whipping stance.

The Malaysian Chinese of today compromises mainly of ethically correct individuals but there are that group that will just sell their wife & daughters at the right price still existing. And the new generation chinese under the new malay educational system are turning backwards and stepping back to the neanderthal stage of human evolution with their chinese education, chinese upbringing & everything chinese. They forget the fact that the malays are in control and in order for the chinese to succeed, the chinese themselves must integrate into the malaysian society as a whole by knowing hoe to read, write & speak the languages relevant to the Malaysian society and that is Speak malay to the mats, speak chinese to their own kind and speak english to the outside world, but frankly, the level of language proficiency in Malaysia is so bad that they can hardly speak to each other properly without brweaking into their own dialect sounding chinese.

And Malaya was the better half of the straits settlement in terms of language proficiency & everything else when the colonial masters was still around, now the malaysian chinese comprises less than 5% of elites and the rest of the 95% are all pigs synchronising with the rest of malay pigs, buying pork in carrefour & jusco is like buying contraband and these 95% always claimed to be suppressed by the malays. That is the reason why we always see malaysian chinese working as hawker help, workshop assistants & factory workers back in the 80's & 90's, if they were any good, even the middle tier of the income group in Singapore would have been overtaken by them back then, now congratulations to all SIngaporeans those china dogs are taking over all groups & sectors in the Singapore society.

Perhaps the Mat was being polite to you. If it was a Sinkie chinese cab driver, he'll probably tell you to FO because he has got better things to do like seeing his PRC mei mei than fetching you anywhere. esp cheapskate Sinkies who want to go by the meter.

Haha u sound like a mat. Excuses excuses. If wife run away, u say the woman is slut instead of admitting your cock short.
