SINGAPORE: Commuters in Singapore are bracing themselves for transport delays following a major disruption on a main MRT line.
Regular train services will not be available on the East-West Line between Boon Lay and Queenstown MRT stations, in both directions, for at least the rest of Wednesday (Sep 25).
Shuttle train services will ply some stations, but there will be no service between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations.
This comes after an incident on Wednesday morning where an eastbound train developed a fault near Clementi station at about 9am.

SINGAPORE: The East-West Line (EWL) of SMRT experienced a major breakdown on Wednesday (25 Sept) morning, causing significant disruptions in train services between Boon Lay and Queenstown MRT stations.
SMRT confirmed the incident in a Facebook post at 09:52 am, attributing the issue to a traction power fault. Free regular bus services have been made available to commuters between the affected stations.

In a subsequent post, SMRT confirmed that at 9:25 a.m., a Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) train on the East-West Line experienced a power trip while returning to Ulu Pandan Depot, causing another train near Clementi station to stall.
The company assured that station staff had been deployed to assist affected commuters, and in-train as well as station announcements were being made to keep them informed.
“Please follow our official channels for updates. We apologize for the disruption to your morning commute,” SMRT said in a statement.

Commuters reported various issues on social media, with one netizen stating that the disruption started around 08:55 am, when a train fault was observed at Clementi MRT station.

ADULT card fares for public transport users will increase by 10 cents per journey, while fares for concession-card users will go up by 4 cents from Dec 28 this year.

The increase in fares for these cards, which are used on public buses and trains, is based on this year’s fare-review exercise by the Public Transport Council (PTC). The council said in a statement on Monday (Sep 9) that it will grant an overall fare increase of 6 per cent for this year.

The figure is less than a third of the 18.9 per cent maximum allowable quantum for fare adjustments this year. The maximum allowable quantum is derived from the output of this year’s fare-adjustment formula (3.3 per cent) as well as the deferred-fare quantum from previous years’ exercises (15.6 per cent), said PTC.

SINGAPORE – The gap between public transport fare revenue and the cost of providing bus and MRT services has narrowed slightly in the 2024 fare review exercise, as the Government is set to fork out $50 million less in subsidies than in the previous year to keep the system running.

The Government is providing an extra $250 million in subsidies to cover the funding gap in 2024, less than the $300 million in additional subsidies for the 2023 exercise.
The job of the Public Transport Council (PTC) is to ensure that fares remain affordable on the one hand, while closing the gap between fare revenue and the cost of running services.

This has been made more difficult in recent times, with factors such as inflation and wage growth making the operation of the public transport system increasingly costly.
PTC works out the cost to run services by looking at, among other things, year-on-year changes in inflation, wage costs, and diesel and electricity prices, and how much fare revenue is needed to foot that bill.
